Never heard a great deal of Richie Havens to be honest apart from the Woodstock vid, doing a bit of catching up on youtube, apart from his great voice I noticed his unique guitar style
RIP Mr Havens

Richie played a guitar 'flat-tuned' and barred with his thumb. Never learned what key he tuned it to. Here's a little anecdote. The camera angle in the Woodstock vid reveals that Richie had no teeth in his upper jaw. He had a denture but never used it to perform. He used to carry it in the pocket of his overcoat. I never saw him use it socially either. Not around us, anyway. In his later publicity shots he's seen with a full dentition. Times were better by then and the affordability of proper care. I always attributed something of Richie's early vocal quality to the fact that he had no upper teeth. Back then, my favorite song in his set list was Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather."

re the gumsy look, he looks a lot younger in the vid I watched (with false teeth in place) talking about Woodstock and ( to date the vid) Obama's inauguration than he did at Woodstock, whats that 40 years or so, might be something in all this botox and the like, but a fine set of pearly white gnashers.....I'll say no more........nice song that too Doc ...cheers

Saw Django Unchained recently and hearing Richie singing 'Freedom' from the soundtrack was memorable.
