My good old friend and drummer Ken just called to inform me that Richie Havens died today. Back in the day, when we were doing our thing, Fri & Sat evenings at The Cafe WHA?? ['64-'66] the amazing Richie Havens was part of that life. Before Woodstock and all that it accrued to him, his musical genius was right up front. The good times, conversations between sets, and spontaneous jams we often enjoyed together will forever be part of our memories of those days and that scene.

The last time I saw Richie was in 1974, at a party Manny Roth threw at the WHA. Some years had passed since he had dropped in on us at another gig in Manhattan and sat in for awhile. Woodstock had already put a face on him for the world. I had come over directly from the hospital where I was a resident, dressed all in white. Richie took one look at me and said.."What the hell is this?!?!?!....and laughed. Ken spent some time with him backstage after a concert Richie did in South Florida several years ago. I was hoping to catch that break again. It was not meant to be.

The world was blessed for his talent and his gifts. Another six stringer gone to the great band. We shall not see the likes of him again.

Yo Manny!!!.....Richie's arrived. Great set Jimi, your buddy Richie's on next.

I'm very sad to hear this. Richie was a good soul and a remarkable talent. I was turned on to him while living in Greenwich Village about spring of '68. That was a memorable time for me and his music was part of the sound track for that period. The good die young.

That is just terrible,Richie Havens had such a unique guitar style and a voice that really made people sit up and take notice because that too was uniquely beautiful. What impressed me most though was that he was a life-long champion of the peace movement. To this day, whenever I hear or see the film clip of him singing "Freedom" at Woodstock,I get goosebumps all over-he put his soul into that song and it is clearly evident.Anyway he is now with the God that he loved all of his life.God Bless You Richie Havens.

R.I.P. Richie Havens from New Orleans !

I found out about it because the neighborhood bar here - the Buffa Lounge, dedicated the afternoon to playing Richie's music on the Juke !

Just saw him last year here at JazzFest !

I'll miss him !

cheers!

Richie was supposed to fifth on the opening day at Woodstock. The traffic had the first four performers not in position. They talked Richie into taking the opening spot. Richie Havens in history as the opening performer for the legendary, Woodstock. RIP Richie.
