...or bass player's don't get the recognition that they deserve.

But this guy, Nathan East, is one of the most heard bassists around, even if you don't know it, you've probably heard him.

We happened to see him on the Quincy Jones 80th Birthday Bash @ Vegas and man, he is so smooth whether with a jazz orchestra, touring currently with Toto, Clapton, Satriani, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Herbie Hancock, George Harrison, BB King, Michael Jackson, Sting, Elton John and many others.

From wiki:

"He has said his early influences included Charles Mingus, Ray Brown and Ron Carter on upright bass; and James Jamerson, Paul McCartney and Chuck Rainey on electric bass. He studied music at UC San Diego. Nathan East is an accomplished amateur magician."

"East is also credited on numerous soundtracks including Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Crossroads, Tarzan, Waiting to Exhale, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Preacher's Wife, Phenomenon, One Fine Day, Lethal Weapon 2, Lethal Weapon 3, Rush, Escape From L.A., Something to Talk About, Brewster's Millions, Thelma & Louise and Footloose."

He's in my top 5 all-time bass players for sure!

Nate is considered as a master of the 5-string bass.

Image

His first-call 6-string was a faded cherry sunburst Yamaha TRB6.

The polar white TRB6P made its first public debuts in early 1991. Nathan brought back this white 6-string monster in 2005.

I saw him playing a flat black JM2 and a silent upright bass.

Apparently Nate chose the JM2 as a nod to the honeyburst StingRay 5 he played between 1988 and 1994.

Huge fan.

Those Yamaha JM2's are super solid basses. Played one a few years ago that blew me away.

I've seen (heard) Nathan East 2 times live , once with Phil Collins (which was a GREAT concert , as opposite to what I expected) - and one time with Clapton . He just is a rock-solid bass-genious :D

Discontinued.

John Myung returned to the Music Man camp shortly afterwards.

Nate is no longer a member of Clapton's touring band. He had officially quit the lineup in late 2005. Willie Weeks replaced him the following year.

Nathan played bass on The Road To Escondido before reforming Fourplay with Larry Carlton, Bob James and Herbie Hancock.

I used to work with his cousin and he hooked us up with tickets and backstage passes to a Clapton show at Great Woods in '92.

We hung out with him and the band afterwards at the 4 seasons hotel in Boston

Nate lets his bass "sing" with his voice.

A playing technique which really makes sense.
