I'm not looking to amplify, but rather use for a monthly acoustic jam - but might use to record with via microphones.

Hello :D
I have the cheap China- made Dobro . It works pretty well. If you're looking for blues/rock-type playing , you should go for a round-neck. The squarenecks are more dedicated country-style, IMO

Here it is with my square neck lap steel

I can even provide you with a sound example , showed in an earlier thread on this forum:

ive got a jay turser jt res. thin body resonator with a single humbucker pickup at the neck and a pickup ring built into the resonator. i find this to be more versatile as it has a blend control and i can either use the resonator pickup or the humbucker or both at the desired blend.. very nice guitar for the price..

That looks and sounds fine to my ears!

I've only played slide on a regular guitar, and just thinking of adding
one for a monthly acoustic/low volume jam that we do.

I've been in touch with Frankie (FrankieTheKid) and heard about his
as well...and his 15 year old son is pretty darn good too!

Does anyone own a Fender model?

This one:

Also, does anyone remember the guy in the UK that was making them
out of Squier Telecasters? I linked it a few years back, but can't find it now.

Always preferred round necks. Had a square neck back in the late eighties and I could never get used to playing it standing up so I used it as a trade in on a Fender Twin!

most likely because the square necks were mad to be played like a lap steel not standing..

I prefer roundnecks, but I do have a squareneck or a lap steel somewhere down at the lower half of my GAS list...since getting the opportunity to sit in as a slide player with a country band a few times (and using another guy's lap steel), I think it would be a nice addition to my herd and another chance to play with more bands/venues.

Having said that, I really, really like my Dean Chrome G acoustic/electric...it sounds very good acoustically and pretty dang good amplified (the blend knob to balance the two pickups works very well).

...The Dean Chrome G would probably sound better amplified if I had an acoustic guitar amp or a good acoustic preamp into a PA, but plugging it into the "Normal" channel of my '63 reissue Vibroverb (the channel in which I installed a lower gain preamp tube for playing harp [to prevent feedback]) and setting the controls clean and flat works pretty well.

This is a video of the guitar being played acoustically...click on the picture and pardon the sloppy performance of me playing the Screamin' Armadillos song "Panther City Blues"...

To be honest, I thought the tone of the Fender FR-50 was pretty good, but the overall volume a little "quiet"...it didn't project as well as other similarly priced wooden acoustic resos out there on the market.

Metal-bodied resos generally project volume/sound better, but they obviously sound different, so what ever you're going for (woody or zingy/metallic) needs to be taken into consideration.

Plus, this just looks cool...

I don't own a reso myself, but a friend of mine has one of these http://www.gretschguitars.com/products/ ... 2716010503 (at least I think it's that one). It sounds great, and he gets some awesome blues tones out of it. I've tried it (upside down, since I'm a lefty), and the neck was very comfortable, and had good playability. I would definitely recommend one of these. I've actually been considering a purchase of my own, and then modifying it to be left-handed.

I've never owned a squareneck but I think a roundneck would be more versatile.

My Tricone is the best sounding resonator I've played, but it's an old school style with poor upper fret access. It also weighs a ton and hurts the ribs when playing seated. If you want acoustic loud though, you can't go past them. Beautiful sound.

I also have the Gretsch Honeydipper which is a comfortable little brass bodied single cone with biscuit bridge. The quality of the Gretsch range is very high.

I have nothing against wood bodied resonators except that it's hard to find one that doesn't have the spider style bridge. I much prefer the biscuit type.

Let us know what you decide on Mike. This is my favorite subject.

Goodonya ...Mark.

Hi Mike. I played a FR50 a couple of years ago and spent a good few days with it. However it wasn't mine and I had to give it back.
Sounded nice enough for what I know of Res's. Didn't play too great but did stay in tune well, really well for the way I whacked it.

Also early March whilst out of town gigging up near Skipton, I went to a guitar shop and got to try a res-Tele. I thought of the link you'd shown me years ago. In truth, I wasn't impressed, though I never played the guitar amped. Didn't have the volume of a Res and didn't play or feel like a good Tele should.

Thanks Nick. I had a gut feeling that those modified Squier ones
would have some kind of issues and unimpressive, but they looked kinda cool.

Most complaints I've heard in general about resos are noisy/rattles with the spider/bowl and setup/intonation on some models with no neck reinforcement.

I guess the bottom line is, like usual, you usually get what you pay for.
