i'm soon getting a epiphone les paul standard (i already have a decent squier strat, dont hate me) and i'm also visiting my uncle in california. when ui started playing last year i saw him here in pa and he said "bring ur guitar next time and we'll record some stuff"

i usually fly out there and that would be the first time i took a guitar on an airplane. would i have to book my guitar in luggage or could i carry it on is my main question.

also, if you want a referance to my case, i'm getting a skb les paul case. link below.

Depends on the Airlines you are flying with. Check with them to find out.

I once got into it with an airline because they told me I had to either buy the $2500 guitar a seat or put it in baggage. I refused to do either and they finally let me put it in the overhead once I proved it would fit....barely. That was on United.

"Carry-on Baggage
Guitars and other smaller musical instruments, such as violins, will be accepted as your free carry-on baggage on Delta operated flights1. These items must easily fit in the overhead compartment or approved stowage location in the cabin, on a space available basis at the time of boarding. If adequate space is not available, the item must be checked."

straight off the delta website. i think i will be able to carry it on but if worst comes to worst i'll check it.

also does anyone have anytips of what to do to the guitar itself. should i like just put it in the case or should i like wrap it in buble wrap?

It shouldn't be a problem in a pressurized and heated cabin.

If you can at all avoid it, do NOT put it in with regular baggage. Do whatever you can do to make sure that it is carried on with you at all times, unless you happen to have one of the NTSB approved cases to go over your regular guitar case.

I know Gary Nichols personally, and on a flight he took across country, he checked his favorite acoustic, and from the damage done to case and guitar, it looks like one of the baggage handlers decided the guitar case would make a good step-stool. He now refuses to fly anywhere if he is taking guitars with him, and personally, I don't blame him.

I would make sure it is in a flight case either way because you
may get their and find there is not enough room and have to
check it as baggage. Airline are hard to deal with now days
and you don't wont to get bumped at the last minute because of a
problem with it.

In college I had a friend who was an excellent classical musician. He made a trip to Argentina and bought a hand crafted guitar. On the flight home, it depressurized and shattered into a million little toothpicks. He was not happy at all.

An electric guitar is a different animal though. I doubt an electric would do that although temperature changes might cause problems... I don't know.

I'm pretty sure to qualify as your carry on it has to be in a gig bag not a hard case. Also, as far as checking it, TSA has the authority to break open locked cases in order to search them. So checking it would be a last resort for me, 'cuz sometimes they don't get them refastened very well and the standard liability is not very high. You might actually be better off putting in the case, putting the case in a box, and shipping it UPS or something.

I flew (United) to Hawai'i with my acoustic about 5 months ago, so here's my $0.02
If your flight starts or connects with a regional jet, you can carry it until you get to the plane,
then they'll put it with the oversize carry-on. When the plane lands, they'll bring it to you as you get off.
On a full size plane, you can put it with the coats in the closet. (if it doesn't fit in the overhead)
BTW, Delta is probably the most musician-friendly airline out there.

it should be fine, as long as you keep it in the case, unless they think you're going to bring the plane down with a guitar :)

altho i wouldn't use the word AXE around them
