ok- maybe i am hearing things  , but lately i am noticing more pick noise when chording. not just at low volumes, but at home practicing on both my strat and epi 339. tried different gauge picks, and only makes a slight difference. maybe i'm just doing something different and i don't realize it.

fyi, i recently had to rebuild my garage, and did a lot of hammering. i don't know if i did something to my hand (it was sore for a while, but fine now). or what it is. doesn't bother me at work at all, but for a short period of time it was hard to hold a pick

who knows- maybe there is a quieter pick out there  any suggestion for this 59 year old would be appreciated.

thanks all

I always hear my pick noise.
Maybe you just never noticed before.

Maybe you are holding the pick harder or strumming differently now that you have added some strength to your hand from your D.I.Y'ing.

Pick noise is most attributal to thin picks.

Picks of 1mm or more produce less noise and allow greater attack.

What are you using..??

Cheers!

Try a medium or heavy Fender California Clear.

I don't use a pick when I'm home sitting around plucking a guitar.

it may be the pick thickness. i used to use heavy ones. when i developed the problem after my diy project, i switched to light and medium because hitting the strings with a heavy pick caused an incredible amount of pain. i just got used to the light, and still use them today. maybe i need to work more with the heavy to build my strength up.

has anybody used any other type of pick? i see the wedgie rubber and felt pick out there, but know nothing about what they are for

it's hell getting old-but i don't like the alternative

i play in different spots on the guitar sometimes close to the bridge some times actually over the neck. but when i notice it is if im picking right on top of either pickup. more so the neck pickup.

there are 2 pick noises I can think of....

That 'flicka flicka' sound you hear when using light picks (as stated above)

or, the sound of a heavy pick with a heavy percussive attack - you can hear that on a lot of Black Sabbath recordings. If you play heavy "barre-chord" kind of stuff with an aggressive attack, that might be what you're hearing. Probably the only way to get rid of it would be to change your picking attack. But personally, I think it sounds cool sometimes. I love all those little pops, squeaks and twangs that just naturally come out. Try embracing it!

My taste in picks gets lighter and lighter as the years go by.
I find I have greater expressive control with thinner picks.

In my youth I used to take a 50¢ piece or a silver dollar and roughly shape it like a pick with a pair of visegrips and the coarse wheel of a bench grinder, contour the edges with the fine wheel and then finish it with a wet stone.

Now I'm using Tortex Red or Orange depending on the song.

Gripping the pick too loosely will also make noise.

You didn't say if you're talking about accoustically or through an amp. Using compression will increase pick noise.
My favorite picks are the DAVA with the rubber grips. They're really easy to hold onto. But, I usually keep 6 different types of pick on top of my amp during rehearsal. I find different gauges of picks each have their advantage depending on what I play during each song.

I'm in the same boat. I started with big heavy picks and used them for many years. One day I ran out of them and had some very thin picks laying around. So I picked it up and started playing with them and was amazed at how good it sounded. I could play fast metal, surf and blues and it all sounded a whole lot better than the big heavy picks I was using before. I will never go back to big heavy picks again.
