I used to bite my fingernails when young. The tips of my fingers are now very large. I have serious problems playing, so it does matter.

Are you saying you have mushroom fingers? Pics please. I've never heard of anything like what you're describing. Unless you have a birth deformity, arthritic condition, or a disease of some sort what you're describing sounds wild. Maybe you would be an awesome bass player.

I'm a really tall guy so I have really big fingers. When I first started to play guitar it was frustrating cause I couldn't use the same finger positioning as I would see others use for chords. I learned how to adapt and use different finger positioning but get the same results. I've also adapted doing lead guitar and have gotten pretty good at it. So if you have small or very large fingers all you need to do is adapt and when you do you will excel.

You get into the habit of watching the hands of your favorites to pick up some cues as to how things are done. The second finger of Clapton's left hand is about 1/4" longer than the first. He uses that finger to fret notes that most others will use the third finger for. Chuck Berry's hands are immense. The neck of his guitar looks like a twig in it. He generates that back beat boogie shuffle which he became famous for, and laid down the foundation of modern rock with, most easily. Others have to give it a stretch. His counterpart on the piano was Fredric Chopin. Those stacks of 'bunches of grapes' notes on the sheet music of his work are a function of his stretch. I could never play that stuff with ease. Some do. Rise to the maximum level of your gifts and run with them. You'll find your nitch.
