Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

WHEW.. !!

Well, we definitely raised the bar to a new level this year…!! It truly was a Marathon !!

The weather was unusually cold for New Orleans, but that didn't matter much, esp. since MSP got a total of 8" snow while we were gone.

We made every stop on our itinery and then some. There were very few nights over the past 2 weeks that we made it back to our house before 4am, and several after 6am.

Went to Crawfest at Tulane University and saw Mia Borders - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRpiriNF3VU . Lots of Sun, Mudbugs, Beer and great Funk !

JazzFest was amazing ! Brother Tyrone & the Mindbenders - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av3XXsjcIY4 were amazing ! Geo. Benson played a great set. B.B. King kinda phoned it in, but hey, at his age, he deserves it. I've seen him many times over the past 40 years, so maybe I'm being too critical - those seeing him for the 1st time loved the show. Earth, Wind & Fire are still kickin' it ! Better Than Ezra were better than I expected and Dave Mathews, though not my favorite, put on a good show.

But the best was all the local music we saw.

Our fav local band - Papa Grows Funk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27MOkNiMiQc is going on 'indefinite hiatus' after 13 years together, several overseas tours, a few albums as well as being the house band at the Maple Leaf every monday nite. We've known these guys for 10 years, saw them 3 times on this trip alone as well as chatting and having drinks with them. June Yamagishi is a killer git player and was happy to learn that I've taken it up (gave me alot of sh*t about it actually).

Their 2nd to last performance started at midnight. Both June and John Gros each had already played 2 separate gigs earlier that evening !! They're really on a Farewell Tour now and Papa John shouted out at the start of the show: " After 13 years together, this is our last night at the Maple Leaf... We're gonna have a good time and play all night for Ya'll... !!" And they did just that ! We left with them to have breakfast together at 7:30am !!

Another old acquaintance is Walter 'Wolfman' Washington - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOAkYttmojk . Saw Walter play twice... once with the Roadmasters at Checkpoint Charlie's and once with the Joe Krown Trio at the Maple Leaf. Walter lives just a block away from where we stay and we met and had drinks with him several times at our mutual local watering hole - the Buffa Lounge !

Met Little Freddie King - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQdTbEARhSs and saw him twice at Carrollton Station and Siberia (have some good pics with him). Great Player and really nice man - there just aren't many of these old Mississippi Bluesmen left ! Most amazing thing is the economy with which he plays.

Guitar 'Lightnin' Lee - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27AaGQ5aCaQ shared the bill with Little Freddie King at Siberia and was great ! Nice guy, but watch your women around him !!

Saw Eric Lindell at Carrollton Station - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVBkXWJ3_-8 . Great !

Saw Sonny Landreth twice - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1qtVQjCi90 - at the Maple Leaf and the Rock & Bowl. What's to say... one hell of a showman !

Tab Benoit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKpe089_c8g was at the Rock N Bowl and played 'til 4am - great show !

Had a nice romantic dinner planned for Tues. night, but I ran into John ‘Pappa’ Gros on Frenchmen St. that afternoon. John asked what our plans were that night and I told him dinner at Clancy’s. He said he was given a pair of tickets to a Tribute to Toussaint – a 75th Birthday Celebration for Alain Toussaint at Harrah’s Theatre. Said that he had since accepted a private gig and couldn’t use them… would my wife and I like them..??

I saw this event advertised featuring: Elvis Costello, Dr. John, The Neville Bros., Irma Thomas, Miss Sophie Lee, Jon Cleary, Deacon John, Joe Stampley and a host of others. Tix were going for $350@ so I said: “ Sure..!!” Little did I know (not even sure John knew), that these were V.I.P. passes for $1,250@ !!

I found out when we got to Harrah’s and they led us backstage to the Green Room for a meet & greet cocktail party with all the performers! My wife was walking on clouds ! After we were 2nd row center for the show, and again backstage after the show… incredible evening !!

I saw John the next nite and thanked him and offered to buy him dinner. He said it wasn’t necessary, that the tix were given to him by some ‘Fat Cat’ who had booked PGF for a private party last Mardi Gras.

We’ve been making this annual pilgrimage for many years, but this year was especially memorable.

As much as I love New Orleans, it is good to be home. I haven't played a guitar for 2 weeks and know that my callusses have softened, so sore fingers ahead. I'm also embarking on a self-imposed abstinence from alcohol for 1 month to let my liver heal, plus a diet to lose the 6 pounds I gained, despite walking more than 6 miles every day.

If you’ve never been to New Orleans, a trip there (especially during JazzFest) belongs on the Bucket List for sure!

Cheers!
