I can't say I remember much of their music, but their 4th album which dropped this week is at #1 according to Billboard with 106K copies sold already.

"Paramore’s self-titled album, released by the label Fueled by Ramen, sold 106,000 copies last week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving the group — down from a quintet to a trio — its first No. 1. Mr. Paisley’s album, “Wheelhouse” (Arista Nashville), has gotten a great deal of media attention for the single “Accidental Racist,” but that attention was not enough to take it to the top spot. With 100,000 sales, the album lands at No. 2."

For those who dig Paramore, how would you describe their sound and songs?

I quite like Paramore, and I've seen them a couple of times. Most of their stuff sort of fits under the generic pop-punk umbrella, and its all very accessible. I'm not much into anything I've heard off their new album though.

I'm curious as to the how the "down from a quintet to a trio" affects their sound and overall song compositions...obviously 106 thousand copies sold...so there is *something* that they have going on.. :?:

They were on a TV show here in the UK a couple of weeks back. I think the pop-rock label is a bit unfair. Emo-post-punk-(slightly popish)-rock, maybe? They've got a bit of a chili peppers-type funk vibe to them too.

TV show clip here:

[EDIT: I should point out that they're not really my cup of tea, but not offensive to my ears either!]

+1

For todays day and age, it could actually be a whole lot worse.

These guys are every garage band's dream. The original core members have been playing together for ages, since their early teens. Even before Hayley Williams was finally "allowed" to join the band, she was writing songs for the guys who were working under another name. So most of them have been together since at least their early teens. The original bassist quit and the current bassist is non-original to the clique. Also I think they might have a new drummer on the new album, but I don't know who it is or if the original drummer will tour.

Originally Ms. Williams was the one who got signed with Atlantic and she wanted a band and didn't want to go pop which was where the label wanted her to go. She studied under Brett Manning who is one of the busiest vocal coaches in Nashville. (He probably wasn't pulling his hair out over working with her since she's not as pitchy as some of the other people he's tutored that mostly work in country music.) Atlantic decided to let her have her way and she got her old neighborhood garage bandmates to back her and they called the thing Paramore. Atlantic moved the project off Atlantic proper and onto the Alternative label Fueled By Ramen which was probably a good marketing move making them look more upstart than mainstream.

I would not say there is no love for Paramore. They are a NON-country band out of a Nashville, Tennessee suburb. That in itself deserves a salute and a reason to see what they have going. They've won Grammys, PLURAL. Critics love them because they really are not always easily categorized and their lyrics make sense most of the time with clarity and no mystical hidden cryptic dark meanings to their songs. Sometimes they are Emo, sometimes they are Pop-Punk, sometimes you really can't tell what pigeonhole to put them in. Ms. Williams is a captivating live performer that really puts on a great show and I for sure can't think anyone that seems to have a better time at it than she does. After so many stoic, manic depressive, moody and overly complex Alternative bands, they are fresh air.

Really I just like them because I think they are always having fun with the music. I find their stuff raw but refreshing, energetic and colorful. Sort of like moonshine mixed with lemonade plus a splash of grenadine on top. They are playing Charlotte again soon I think and I'd really like to go.

FYI Dave they will be at the Fillmore in Charlotte May 20th. I enjoy their music although I'm not a fan of the alternate tunings they've used in the past. Haley has a unique voice and she's a little firecracker on stage. :)

I'm noticing that many of the newer signed bands fall into the singer-songwriter type of vibe - it seems this band does not, but more electro-pop?

The original drummer and two guitarists (one of whom is the drummer's older brother) are no longer in the band. The original bass player left before they recorded their first album and returned shortly after, and is still in the line-up. I think I heard that the current guitarist recorded the drums on the new album, and the drummer from Nine Inch Nails plays with them live, or at least did at some point.

Thanks for the heads-up. Just checked and Fillmore show is sold out. Firecracker is maybe the best word I've heard.

The band has gone through changes. Actually as long as Hayley Williams wants to tour there will probable be a Paramore in some form. The band exists because she wants it to.
