back from the woodshed, want to give my thanks for those that posted about rocksmith.

i've only been practicing for say 2.5 years, now have 2 teachers, one lady into classical and rock, and one jazz guy who grad'd berkelee, studied with charlie banacos, played in bands up n down bourbon street for years, he can play like anything it seems.

all that says is those two folks can play really well and i guess teach too although the way they teach, each is really different. but i do what they say and practice it.

i'm an old guy who was recommended the guitar and music lessons as a way to help out with an illness. i ended up loving the guitar although at times it is very hard instrument to learn but i can feel its beauty and power once in awhile so that keeps me at it and damn the frustrations.

so, i was thinking a new tool to add that may help me a bit. a tool that helps even a little, not to substitute my f2f lessons, but to help/expand a little. well after reading some of the new posts today i'm gonna check into that tool rocksmith.

a little more coordination, speed, finger soldiers on target, rocksmith might help with that. thats gotta be a good thing.

The game has alot to offer, it has modes to practice scales, chords, hammer-ons, pull-offs, ect. If a song is giving you problems, you can use riff repeater and practice the section thats giving you trouble. It starts you off easy on a solo ( like the solo in more than a feeling) and the more notes you hit, it sees that and adds more notes until finally your playing the entire solo note for note. If you have Xbox live then you can go online and pick a song from the library and pay 2.99 for the download and download it to your console, Im waiting for them to release some uncle ted, so i can try to learn stranglehold. Its a cool game, you will like it

i bought it along with rocksmith. so far so good though it will take time to get used to notes coming towards me on the fret lane.

i think it will be a good tool for what it does along my perceived needs. no substitute for my f2f teachers and the practice sessions they have me doing daily. this rocksmith might toss in a "fun factor" too. beats me, too early to tell.

glad you folks took the time educate me on it and its pros-cons, etc.

Now that you have had it for a little bit, how do you like it? Once you get used to the layout its pretty cool

mo4FFU, did you flip the display so that it looks like standard tab, like this:

e-----------------
B-----------------
G-----------------
D-----------------
A-----------------
E-----------------

instead of the preset:

E-----------------
A-----------------
D-----------------
G-----------------
B-----------------
e-----------------

I use tab quite a bit, so found the way it was initially set really confusing. You can change it in options. If you're not a big tab user, you might find the standard layout okay. The height of notes makes more sense to me with the inverted approach though - low notes are lower than high notes, for example.

Interesting discussion, because this is the actual trend for learning, heavily assisted by digital media. Surely, one can learn faster this way, but here is the point I want to raise: you can look-up Andreas Varady, 12 year old utube guitarist. One could argue that he is real good and that whatever he lacks will be coming later. Maybe.

I am old school. I think if you learn things in the wrong order, there will be problems.
Both my kids are interested enough now that I find them studying. They are obtaining real bodily rythm feel, correct note duration and so forth. Just shooting targets to get synched will not do. I much prefer those old tricks teachers would use, such as blindfolding you and asking you to play the line slow and meaningful.
But as far as ear-training and diagrams and stuff, the new generation of tools I am sure is a great step forward.
My Strat is perfect, it is alive. Don´t make me WATCH LED lights! I´m busy actually LISTENING to what I do and where I´m going.
