Rub poop all over it, and it will no longer smell like smoke. :P

Just kidding, My house caught on fire once and the fire department got to it in time. However, anything fabric smelled like smoke. The insurance company sent a company out to the house and they collected all the fabric and put through a process. It worked 100%. So I know someone knows how.

It was probably put in an ozone chamber. We used to have a carpet cleaning and restoration company. We went to school and were certified by the IICRC. We would seal off whole rooms and run ozone generators. The generators did a great job.

The smell will be tar and so on from the smoke adhering to the lining. Yep, you can wait for it to fall off and for the material to absorb enough other scents from febreze or athletic balls or bounce sheets or dog bed balls or whatever to mask it, but you won't get rid of it in a hurry that way.

If you want to shift it fast, you need to clean the material in a way which won't harm the material, the guitar you put in later, or the glue holding the material in place.

So, break out the baby wipes! Seriously. Give the lining a good rub over. Dry. Repeat. Let it dry again, then give it a good rub down with a clean, dry towel. It will bring the lining up a treat and nix most, if not all of the smell (I'm leaving wiggle room here, because if it has been used as an ashtray, chances are it will always smell like one!).

Incidentally, this also works a treat on car headlinings. I've rescued more than one light grey headlining from an amber coloured disaster.

You might want to do a little spot test first, but baby wipes are quite mild.

EDIT: If the case is an ABS plastic (like 70s and 80s Fender ones) the 'back to black' stuff for car dash boards works like a charm on the outside of them too. Peek polish for the clasps.

That's the exact type of case I have. Luckily for me I have baby wipes so will try this tomorrow.

I recently bought and Elitist Les Paul and the case smelled like cigarettes. I doused it with Fabreeze on the inside, to the point of the lining feeling wet, and left it open for a couple of days in the Garage. I then cleaned the outside with Lemon Pledge. It really reduced the smell, but still a hint on the case. I don't notice much odor on the guitar itself.

I vacuumed mine real well, doused it with Fabreeze Fabric Spray and left it open for three days. I don't smell any more smoke and I can't really smell the Fabreeze unless I put my nose next to the lining. I don't think mine was a real bad case, but I'm glad to say that treatment worked.

Try using a commercial steam cleaner that a lot of supermarkets rent out.Make sure that you buy the cleaning solution that's formulated for cleaning upholstery though. After thoroughly steaming out the case both inside and out,set it outdoors to dry. When it's completely dry put as much activated charcoal as you can in a plastic container with a lot of holes cut into the top.If you can be sure that the case won't be moved, just put some tinfoil in the case as it lays flat on the floor or shelf etc. and spread the activated charcoal on it and leave it for 4 or 5 days. You can buy activated charcoal at most pet stores that sell fish.If you can't find activated charcoal, the barbeque charcoal would do the trick but you'd have to keep them in longer.Good Luck-tobacco smell can be worse than musty mildew smells to get rid of.
