Bought a used guitar along with case and I just cant get rid of that cigarette smell. I sprayed lysol and freebreze inside the case and left it outside in the sun to no avail. What can I do to get rid of that smell? Nothing against the guys and girls that smoke, I used to and quit 10 years ago.

Get a sprayer w/ some distilled water.

Lightly spray interior (not wet, just damp).

Add a dryer sheet and close up for a week. That will mask the smell more than get rid of it.

Another way to go is get one of those pet sprays which masks the urine smell on a carpet so the pet doesn't return to soil the same spot - available at Pet stores, dubious efficacy.

Short of re-lining the case, that's about the best you can do.

Eventually, the smell will wane, but it could take months/years.

cheers!

A case I just got with a guitar smelled from tobacco. I vacuumed it and then sprayed it with Fabreeze Fabric Spray, not the air freshener. I left it open for two days and now it's much better. It smells more like Fabreeze than tobacco now.

Rub poop all over it, and it will no longer smell like smoke. :P

Just kidding, My house caught on fire once and the fire department got to it in time. However, anything fabric smelled like smoke. The insurance company sent a company out to the house and they collected all the fabric and put through a process. It worked 100%. So I know someone knows how.

Buying a smoker's used guitar is a lot like buying a smoker's used car... you have to accept the odor is there and may never leave.

You could take up smoking again and then you won't probably notice it. :P Actually, vinegar and baking soda gets rid of smells really effectively, but I imagine it could mess up the liner. I recently bought a used drum machine that smelled like stinky perfume or Fabreeze and luncheon loaf, so I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and place it next to an incense burner for a couple of days. That did the trick, but it was plastic, so it might be different because of fabric. You could try airing it out for a long time and burn some incense that you like next to it. It may help.

I once bought a used case, a steal but it actually had cig butts in it.

I febrezed it, then put a handful of dryer sheets in it, changed them out every few days over a couple weeks and that took care of it. Downy sheets are the best by the way, that's what was recommended for our watercraft and they work great. Much better smell then mothballs.

Dryer sheets, that's a good idea.

Try baking soda. I put a box of baking soda in the trunk of my car to get rid of the smell of gasoline I spilled. Changed the box 2 or three times no more gas smell. Cheap and worth a try.

I had to laugh when I read this thread. Back in my heavy gigging days, I played every weekend from 1994 to 1999 and back then, people smoked everywhere! My big Peavey speakers were fabric covered, which didn't help, and every time I opened that band trailer, it was like stepping into a bar!

To this day, when I am digging through the old PA and band gear, I sometimes get a major whiff of the past when I open something up. Happily, none of my guitars stink, just everything else... and it's been what, 15 years..?

A friend told me that they put fabric in a vacuum room. Then suck all the air out and this somehow makes the smoke smell die out. Not sure if this is the case but it sounds good. Maybe NASA will let you store your stuff in their vacuumed space sim room for a few days and get that smell out. What would happen to a guitar in space? Where no one can hear you play.
