Confidence, mostly, I think. If you have the confidence to stick yourself up on a stage and perform to a crowd of random people, you're already ahead of 95% of the male population. Couple that with the whole 'arty' aura and it turns the most average of people into an object of desire pretty quickly.

Sadly, back when it counted, I was the drummer rather than the guitarist. So I have absolutely no idea what anyone on this thread is talking about. :(

"Arty aura... object of desire." Huh.

Most of the men I seem to attract are the creepy drunk ones twice my age. My ability to meet people my own age is also complicated by the fact that people my age aren't allowed to be in the places I play. Nor would they probably be listening to blues, so yeah...

Fast approaching is the time when you and your peers will be of age so that your audience can appreciate you in the venues you frequent as a working musician. As you mature, and a demand increases for you and your work, you may ultimately come to be able to pick and chose the venues. Creepy drunks will always be part of the night life and the intoxicants infused world. They go with the territory.

Keep in mind the dedication and hard work required on your part to reach your present level of skill thus, when you see someone of equal or superior talent, you will appreciate it even more, and on a more sophisticated level. Also remember the same for those who yet not, and are striving to improve. You may, knowingly or unknowingly, become the springboard and inspiration for another's venture into the game. I have a personal experience of such and can tell you that, when it was finally revealed, I was quite humbled by it all.

We here are hardly impartial when it comes to you, but we have consolidated our collective experiences with respect to our support for you. It is obvious that we have opined that you have what it takes, in time. Take a cue from Joe Bonamassa who has been climbing his mountain for the better part of 20 years now. His creativitiy lies not only in his music and his gifts, but the way in which he has forged the business side of his life, and who he counts among his intimate professional colleagues. He owns all the marbles
and, in the business as currently organized, it is brilliant.

We are following you with great interest and pride to be part of this great family here in the Forums. Carry on.

Doc

There's a current dramatic series on American 'telly' based on the life of Michaelangelo which, given some of your other 'gifts', might give you a hint.

Ha - I haven't seen that one. But (for all the wrong reasons) I always loved the 1965 movie, The Agony and the Ecstacy, with Charlton Heston as Michelangelo. It has many unintentionally hilarious moments. For instance, throughout the film Contessina de' Medici, the not-exactly-love-interest played by Diane Cilento, pursues Michelangelo fruitlessly. Finally, somewhere near the end she asks him straight out; "Perhaps you have no time for women?" Chuck looks a bit shifty and replies; "Er... not just at the moment..." Hee-hee!

Back to the topic.

Cheers - C

LOL! So true. Having played many gigs as a guitarist and many gigs as a bassist, the difference in post-gig attention from the crowd (and particularly, crowd members of the female variety) is quite phenomenal.

If I can go on off on tangent, it is interesting that blues guitar seems to have become a "who has the better chops" competition. Music in general is about enjoyment. Enjoying life. A simple 4 chord song might be the most incredible thing anyone has ever heard. Last night I threw in a Muddy Waters CD and it was EXTREMELY powerful. Blues at its purest. I guess such is the essence of Rock and Roll... taking blues and trying to push it a step further. What I'm trying to say is it doesn't matter if one can rip the same licks as anyone else. This is no competition. If that's what anyones concern is, they've forgotten what music is really about.

Toronado, I hear what you're saying, but if there was no competition among the early blues players, they must be the only genre in history that didn't feel the need to outplay their competition.

When I think back to being a 15 year old guitar player in suburban Long Island, it seemed like everybody played guitar back then, and the stiff competition among my peers pushed me to become a way better player. I have no regrets about that.

But back on subject, to texasguitarslinger and any other female forum members, do you feel as a female guitar player you have become more of a 'bro-magnet', or do guys seem to be more intimidated?

I can identify completely with that in terms of age in years and location. However, the competition at that time came in the form of Al Kooper and Paul Simon. Those were the LI people we spoke of in the late 50's:wink:

Yep. While I do play guitar it's usually only for songwriting purposes. Either of our guitarists could be a complete trainwreck the entire set. They are still the center of attention outside of our singer. I can pull off a beautiful melody weaved into a progression in a bridge and I'm still nothing more then a glorified roadie and guitar tech. The guy who fixes their equipment bugs and lugs the heavy stuff. That's okay, though. My girl digs me and she plays guitar. 8)
