Any research into producing bipedal robot systems shows that we stand, walk, and run (or whatever gate) on an inverted pendular system which requires constant unconscious monitoring and adjustment. To put it bluntly, it doesn't take much to destabilize our balance and I think that this carries over to our phobia of heights and produces vertigo (an oversentivity to balance when contemplating heights).

I'm not too afraid of heights as long as I feel 'planted'. Interestingly, I don't mind flying 'up front' in a small plane but I really hate flying in commercial jets because of erratic motion. I'm prone to 'motion sickness' whether I like it or not. Sometimes this can be alleviated by a sense of 'control'. I've been sick on boats or perfectly fine, sick on planes or perfectly fine, sick in cars (etc.) or perfectly fine.

Spiders only bother me if they are on me. Out here we have Jumping Wolf spiders (about the same size as tarantulas but not as bulky). They don't bother me but I wouldn't want one to be walking over my face (all of the arachnophobes just ran screaming). ;)

Claustrophobia - no. I used to be very worried about nuclear war but now don't care. As I've aged I've become less phobic in many ways but still don't appreciate situations which are known to produce unpleasantness - such as a very long RV trip in 90d heat. The hardest part is determining irrational or over-sensationalized fears over regular apprehension. As in, when I was out in the Rocky Mountain National Park and heard a bear growling, I was apprehensive (as it is not impossible to be malled by a bear even in frequented areas) but I wouldn't really about one attacking at my home even if a bit out in the open.

I've heard rattlers in RMNP but never a bear. Yeah, that would make me nervous too. Isn't the view from the top of Trailridge just amazing? The park and Estes are about my two favorite places. Pearl St. in Boulder's pretty cool too.

Fear of heights? NO

Fear of falling? NO

It's the sudden impact at the bottom that scares me.

I used to be very afraid of heights, so I took up rock climbing with my brother-in-law and got over most of it. I still wouldn't walk that path though. I just couldn't trust the construction to continue to hold me.

What is considered high? I make a living climbing towers. A few
months ago I was working at just over 700 feet. Not as easy as
it used to be now that I am getting older but you do what you
have to for the bucks. Thing to remember is aways have one
harness clip on . When doing cross overs one on one off one on
one off. You get used to it and the money. I have been on a few at
mountain elevations were the clouds pass below and you can't
see the ground.

I'm not so much afraid of heights. What gets me is spiders, and bridges. Bridges horrify me.

i don't think anybody's scared of HIGHTS, just afraid of falling, even when i'm only 15ft. high, i can not stand looking up, for fear someone will push me, or i will lose my balance or whatever, its mostly when i take my eyes off the ground, like i can be on the mabye 3rd story of a hotel, but i'm still okay looking down, its only when i look up and take my hands off the rail, i start to have a panic attack.

the same rule does not apply for about the 5th floor and above...

El Caminito del Rey (English: The King's pathway) is a walkway or via ferrata, now fallen into disrepair, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Álora in Málaga, Spain. The name is often shortened to El Camino del Rey.

In 1901 it was obvious that the workers of the Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls needed a walkway to cross between the falls, to provide transport of materials, vigilance and maintenance of the channel. Construction of the walkway took four years; it was finished in 1905.

In 1921 the king Alfonso XIII crossed the walkway for the inauguration of the dam Conde del Guadalhorce and it became known by its present name.
The walkway has now gone many years without maintenance, and is in a highly deteriorated and dangerous state. It is one meter (3 ft) in width, and is over 700 feet (200 m) above the river. Nearly all of the path has no handrail. Some parts of the concrete walkway have completely collapsed and all that is remaining is the steel beam originally in place to hold it up and the wire that follows most the path. One can latch onto the wire to keep from falling. Many people have lost their lives on the walkway in recent years. After four people died in two accidents in 1999 and 2000, the local government closed the entrances; however, adventurous tourists still find their way into the walkway.

wow, that was scarey! terrifying

The height isn't the issue, it's the falling that sucks. I got over that by falling 20 feet straight down a wave and then getting dragged across a reef. After that nothing has sucked more.

The falling isn't an issue, it's that sudden stop that gets me.

That's exactly the response I would expect from someone in the Army.
