I am deathly afraid of heights, but I find it funny that whenever I fly on commercial airlines I have to have a window seat so I can look out.

Thats because you're in a bubble. You're not in control, the choice of embrasing the vertigo is removed, and so you're no longer scared.

No, I think it has more to do with the fact that if I am going to fall I wanna see it and not be surprised by it. Gives me time to make my peace too.

Ya know, I never was afraid of heights. In the Navy, when I was in my 20's, I used to hang over the side of an aircraft carrier underway and not feel a bit of fear. Then in my 30's I started to develop vertigo. Now anything over 15' makes me sweat and get nauseous. It's funny, I'm not afraid but have all the physical reactions of fear.

Sorry let me rephrase that. It is one of the most violent, small towns. Im sure cities like Toronto are way more violent with the gangs they have up there.

And yes it was in a news outlet.

Which carrier?

I was on the USS Fletcher in the mid 80's.

It was one of those Amphib carriers. U.S.S. Belleau Wood LHA 3. Helo's and Harriers. About the size of a WW2 carrier. They used her for target practice a few years back after decommisioning at Pearl. Now she's an artificial reef. Kinda made me sad. I had three of the best and drunkest years of my life on her.

That reminds me of the phobia I have with heights: that my glasses will fall off and be lost forever!

I'm not scared of heights, I'm scared of falling from high places.

I think that the fear of heights is partly due to our unstable balance system. I've noticed that whenever I am sufficiently apprehensive of being near a place with noticeable distance between where I am and the next 'stable' place it involves my knowledge that humans are very unstable systems especially on two legs. Any research into producing bipedal robot systems shows that we stand, walk, and run (or whatever gate) on an inverted pendular system which requires constant unconscious monitoring and adjustment. To put it bluntly, it doesn't take much to destabilize our balance and I think that this carries over to our phobia of heights and produces vertigo (an oversentivity to balance when contemplating heights).

I'm not too afraid of heights as long as I feel 'planted'. Interestingly, I don't mind flying 'up front' in a small plane but I really hate flying in commercial jets because of erratic motion. I'm prone to 'motion sickness' whether I like it or not. Sometimes this can be alleviated by a sense of 'control'. I've been sick on boats or perfectly fine, sick on planes or perfectly fine, sick in cars (etc.) or perfectly fine.

Spiders only bother me if they are on me. Out here we have Jumping Wolf spiders (about the same size as tarantulas but not as bulky). They don't bother me but I wouldn't want one to be walking over my face (all of the arachnophobes just ran screaming). ;)

Claustrophobia - no. I used to be very worried about nuclear war but now don't care. As I've aged I've become less phobic in many ways but still don't appreciate situations which are known to produce unpleasantness - such as a very long RV trip in 90d heat. The hardest part is determining irrational or over-sensationalized fears over regular apprehension. As in, when I was out in the Rocky Mountain National Park and heard a bear growling, I was apprehensive (as it is not impossible to be malled by a bear even in frequented areas) but I wouldn't really about one attacking at my home even if a bit out in the open.

I'm afraid of losing my hearing.

And of Iraqi insurgents and Taliban with guns coming after me. But I have 6 years in the military to thank me for that.
