Some of you may remember a post I made a few months ago about an old Dual turntable that I was going to fix up.

I cleaned it up (it was riddled with black mold, mouse crap, etc) but it wouldn't turn on. After some investigation I found a capacitor on the power switch that was blown out, so I got one in yesterday and replaced it, only to find it still didn't work.

So, me and my girlfriend's dad took it apart, saw it needed some cleaning on the contacts, until the tiny little spring inside it popped out. We found it and spent about 2 hours trying to get it back together. As soon as we did, the spring popped out again, and there was no finding it this time. So, we just soldered a direct connection, bypassing the switch altogether, and it finally turned on. It'll do until I find and order a replacement switch.

So, I pulled out a record to test it with, and the first thing I got was The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Plugged it in and the turntable works like a charm! It's almost good as new, except for a couple of sticky buttons.

Now all I need is a phono preamp (which I'll probably pick up today) because the sound is way too quiet, but all in all I'd say it's a success. It's a Dual CS 728Q direct drive. My dad got it in England in the early 80s when he was stationed there while in the Air Force.

I've got to say I'm extremely happy with having fixed it. I bet it hasn't had a record played on it since the early 90s, and even that's pushing it.

I'll post some pics, maybe a video, when I can. Just had to share.

This is the internet - without pics or video it didn't happen.

I've still got the Dual I bought when I was in Vietnam. In fact, after I let a friend use it for a couple years in the 90s, it's been safe and sound back in the original box ever since as I've no room right now to set it up. I still have the Sansui sound system I bought back then, too. It's all good and my son still wants it all someday.

I had a Dual back in the late 70's. Best turntable I ever owned before or since.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Apologize for the poor picture quality, had to use my phone. It's still far from a perfect restoration, but it's a far cry from what it was before I cleaned and (for the most part) repaired it.

I'm looking forward to getting a phono preamp, which it appears I'll have to get online. I've been everywhere in a 50 mile radius trying to find one, but no go. Can't wait to turn up the volume on this thing, and enjoy the music with a few beers and some pool 8)
