I gotta agree that Slash is/was an incredible player...
I always felt that he took on the mantle of the great Jimmy Page as the the greatest R&R sloppy chops. (although I never thought either were that sloppy at all!).
It makes me think of Steven Tylers remarks to a journalist about how much money it costs to look that cheap!...lol.. I kinda think the same principal applies.
I kinda liked Joe Perry as well while were going down this road.....
(are we supposed to be discussing so many Gibson icons on this board. :)
I cant think of anyone who's done anything close for a while.... although i do love the RHCP.

And yup, while I agree that G&R should cut the foreplay and get on with the reunion tour...
Would you wanna be in a band with Axl.....

Hmmmmmm......How much money we talking about again?.....lol..

Velvet Revolver at the Riviera Theater Chicago VIP seats spring 2004, no ticket stub we were walked up there by staff (a friend of my drummer's). Slash slayed all night long, he is for real. 8)

Here's one for the 'quest for tone' people. I'm given to understand that, when recording, Slash would do his solos through the board and listen to them over the control room monitor because to be in the studio with the amps set as they were was a ticket to total deafness.
One is not likely to be able to do that in one's bedroom without a power soak of some kind.

He’s only getting better. Too good, in fact, for many. See if you can follow me here. Perhaps because he’s heard the criticisms over the years, his new album (released last year, his 2nd as a “solo” artist) is super fast metal in the Yngwie territory. Like he’s trying to show how fast and perfect he can be. It’s probably his most technically great yet (IMO) least musical playing (that I’ve heard anyway). He rips off some insane licks with insane speed. I like when he made the guitar cry as in Sweet Child and all that Guns stuff from that era. As has been discussed here, the winner is not necessarily the one with the most notes played per beat.

@ Her Wanna

I understand your point(s).....
I havnt really gotten into much of his solo stuff although I thought the last one he released with a bunch of 'guests' was pretty cool... I did like the VR stuff alot, and I saw them a few times.... Slash was very cool and wasnt doing the Yngwie thing then.... but I take your point that he may be 'over cooking' some of his solo stuff, but im not as familiar with it as you seem to be.

I certainly couldn't agree with you more though about the number of notes per second does not necessarily make a great or interesting piece of music(if at all!)

I think like the majority of folks here i prefer his Appetite stuff(even the Use your Illusion stuff) to his later efforts, but again......like I said. It would be great to see them together again...
But would you wanna be in a band with Axl....
Me either....

He's sloppy, his intonation on bends is appalling, and his tone grates on my ears.

That said, I think he's great.

He epitomises the spirit of rock in ways most virtuosos could only dream of, and I would not change a thing about him. Rock on, Mr. Hudson, rock on.

Well put! :D

Yeah Slash and Axl were something special for sure but I like Slash and Myles Kennedy just as much. YMMV
