IMHO you hit the real reason by glance. The company's has to compete in the market place with some really good product. They in no way produce a line of pickups as varied as DiMarzio, Duncan, EMG, and Actodyne...not to mention smaller makers like GFS, Lollar, TV Jones, to name a few.

Yah!!. So the tone freaks clamoring for the secret to the tone in SRV's #1 were trying to reproduce a signal generated by pickup which was wound in error and the only way to come up with the gold would have been to kill the goose. We already know how that story ended. :wink:
