Mine was in the fall of '89...

I bought a Fender F-250 acoustic from a friend for $186 (all the money I had at the time). He had bought it brand new a year or two prior, but had written a hot check to buy a Kramer Ferrington acoustic (remember those? ) and needed some money quick!

He taught me four chords (and taught me three of them wrong...two of which I still play wrong). Very soon he wanted to buy the Fender back (because the Ferrington's tone sucked), but I politely declined his offer. I still have (and cherish) this guitar...before long, he sold that Kramer to some poor fool who thought it would sound good.

Three or four months later, after my parents saw my progress on the instrument and the joy I had when playing, they gave me a small budget to go out and buy an electric guitar. Fortunately for me, the same guy had the same problem--he had written a hot check to buy a mid-eighties G&L Invader (a SuperStrat-type guitar with two single coils and a humbucker, plus a Kahler whammy), so-o-o-o....

I offered to buy his "old" 1980 G&L F-100 (which turned out to be a somewhat unique guitar amongst the F-100 line; sunburst finish on mahogany, rosewood fingerboard on maple neck, two passive coil- and phase-tapped humbuckers and a hardtail bridge...plus, it was from the inaugural year of the brand!). We haggled until he agreed upon $250 or so (I can't remember right now).

He also sold me a Gibson G-20 solid state amp for $25 and a six-pack of beer (of which I drank three :P ...beer was a valuable commodity to us at that age).

Two weeks later, he wanted to buy the F-100 back, too, but I politely declined his offer (again). I still have (and love) both the G&L F-100 and the Gibson amp, too.

Twenty-four years later, through all the job losses, "horse-tradin'" and Guitar & Amp Collection Massacres, I still have the three original instruments that started this obsession. I don't know if that guy still has a single instrument from our "salad days."

That's one of the nicest looking guitars I've ever seen. Love the earlier G&L stuff...

My first good bass was a Fender JP90.

My first guitar was a brand new, 1966 Danelectro Convertible, sold to my parents for $45 w/ cardboard case by the local music store when (and where) I began taking lessons. I literally 'converted' it to being electric myself.

My first amp was a 35W Harmony with a 12" speaker I received for Christmas in I believe, 1967. I fried it a few years later.

My first "high end" guitar was a 1961 Shell Pink Fender Strat with matching neck and headstock (rosewood fingerboard). My parents bought this for $75 w/ cardboard case from the owner of a music store whom my mother had grown up with. He was a Fender dealer and had bought it brand new for his daughter who never pursued playing. It was a special ordered from Leo himself. It's the old story: If only I knew then what I know now...

My first "high end" amp was a 1971 Ampeg VT-40; 60W with four 10" speakers. My parents bought this for me because I was constantly out playing and constantly borrowing amps. It cost $320. I fried three of them in a row but they were all under full warranty. The owner of the store we got them from suggested I switch to a Marshall 100W Super Lead head and that's what I did as there was no additional money involved. I bought the four 12" slant Marshall bottom for I believe, $200 new at the same store myself.

I never gravitated towards acoustic guitars all that much but the one I did buy and had for many years was a fantastic playing and sounding Hohner I bought new in 1974 for $75 w/ cardboard case.
