OK, this thread has been done to death I am sure... but I am relatively new to the forum and thought it would be fun.

What was your first six-string? How'd ya get it?

Mine was a Cort Panther strat copy. Got it for Christmas 1984 I believe along with a "coupon" from my parents for lessons at a local guitar shop in Huber Heights OH where we lived at the time.

They didn't get me an amp because they didn't even know it needed one! And they didn't know about plectrums! They had to pick me up a little Gorilla amp when we got back home from spending Christmas at my grandparents place in AL. Also, I broke the 1st string on Christmas Day and had to wait til the day of my first lesson to get a string change.

My teacher was an old country player who didn't know a thing about the popular rock bands of the time and just wanted to teach me the riff to "Peter Gun." I think I lasted 4 lessons. Did not pick up the guitar in more earnest fashion until I was in law school decades later!

My first real six-string was a no-name acoustic with an action like a cheese grater, my mum just bought it for me and my brother when I was about 10 or 11. Prior to that, my first real eight-string was a mandolin, christmas present when I was 7.

We always had a nylon strings when I was a kid, at around 15 my parents bought me a 6 stringer Cort, took a few lessons, got bored like most and put the guitar down for a while. Lessons always bored me. Years later, I picked it back up, decided to stick with it and let my favorite bands be my teachers through my ears. I only wish I had made that decision sooner.

Hmmmm {flashbacks}....

First acoustic
1971... 5th grade, elementary school...
My mom bought me a cheap Sears 3/4 size acoustic, so I could take guitar lessons with my older sister. It was awful... The nut broke at the high E, and I remember my father making a new nut out of some serious heavy duty plastic.

First electric
1973... 7th grade, middle school...
A kid I knew had a cheesy electric called Regent. He got a better guitar for his birthday, and he sold me his old guitar (Regent) for $20 bucks. It was okay, but looked like a generic, cheap copy of a Fender Jazzmaster with twin humbuckers. For an amp, I remember having a cheap Sears amp with a 6" speaker.

I borrowed a 3/4 size nylon string acoustic for a couple of months when I was 13, then my mum realised that I was developing a keen interest in it so bought me an electric guitar and amp out of the local paper.

It was a Satellite exactly like this one -

It came with a Woolworths amp with a bizarre oval speaker and built in tremolo. This did not impress me too much at the time, as all I wanted was distortion, and it had absolutely none, so it was soon joined by an Arion Tube Mania pedal which sounded... awful.

my parents bought it for me when I was 12, it was an attempt to distract me with a hobby because I was becoming a discipline issue. It was some no-name low end guitar you'd get for a 12 year old, I forget the company name.

My first was an old Gretch acoustic that my father had, then I saved all my pennies from odd jobs and when I was 15, I bought a Les Paul copy from Sears. I still wish I had that guitar, I paid 200.00 for it in 1979 and it was a really nice guitar in cherry burst, binding on front and rear like a L.P. Custom, and it had a bolt on neck. I played the heck out of that thing, Im thinking about 600.00 in todays dollars. I got my first real Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro this last November for 1818.00 out the door

My first was a cheap Mako strat copy that my parents picked out. Looked a lot like this:

I was dissapointed cause it wasn't black. I remember wondering what the heck Mako was and when someone told me that it was a kind of shark I liked the guitar a lot more all the sudden. I think I was 11 or 12.

I was 14 it was 1981 and I had to beg my Dad for 10 bucks to buy my friends guitar it was a copy of a Gibson SG it didn't even have a name brand but somebody glued a Buick emblem on the headstock the one with the red white and blue shields ha ha, oh and it was in a house fire too and part of the body was a little burnt and smoke stained and $@!&. Then my big sister God bless her bought me a little tiny Peavey amp and a DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup for it. Man what a piece of crap it was but boy I played the hell out of that thing, never put it down and took it with me everywhere I went. Good times.

Like Frank, I was 10 when my mum bought me my first guitar, a 3/4 size Framus arch top parlor.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

still got it, though its in the attic at the moment. however ive just agreed to let one of my mates borrow it as he wants to learn, so i told him to use mine instead of buying one and then maybe not getting into playing.
