Where on the neck do you like to play?

I have a tendency to go for the A, D, G, and B strings around the 12th fret.

I play at the top of the neck where my instructor tells me for now. Probably now what you were looking for but I had contribute at least once to a question for real players and more experienced hacks

All around. I love to try to explore the fretboard when I play.

You should be capable of playing from the open low-E to the 22-24th fret on the high-E. Too many players get, eh-hem, 'boxed' in by box scale systems. Two easy things to remember:

1. The entire fretboard repeats from the 12th fret on (an octave higher of course).

2. There are other patterns for playing scales. For instance, I like to use the three-note per string, two-string repeating system. It gets across wide swaths of the fretboard and the patterns are childishly simple to remember (same two-string pattern played three times).

For example, try this:

Code:
E||---------------------------|---------------------------|------7--8--10S--12--||
B||---------------------------|---------------------7--8--|--10-----------------||
G||---------------------------|--------4--5--7S--9--------|---------------------||
D||------------------------4--|--5--7---------------------|---------------------||
A||-----------2--3--5S--7-----|---------------------------|---------------------||
E||--2--3--5------------------|---------------------------|---------------------||

I did not say I don't play all over the neck, I said I have a tendency to play there a lot. I like the tone I get there.

I like finding the tonal qualities all over. This is a big thing. I've learned some songs from tablature where the notator obviously wasn't listening to the bell tone of the strings to guide where the original player was playing. For instance, the B string tends to be more tinny compared to the G string on the same notes and this can be heard with experience. This comes from many years of learning songs by ear I guess.

It's good that you like the sound there but don't lock yourself away from the other sound qualities. If noone has noticed from my repeated mentions, I love to do Hendrix or other blues on the top three strings (EAD) with the neck pickup - especially around the 5th to 12th frets. Very sonorous and rhythmically pleasing - and a good contrast to an Am or Em pentatonic on the higher strings (that 'blues conversation' thing).

I have found my self playing mostly around the 12th fret. Lots of Blues jamming in E.

I'm mostly a rhythm player, but I love the sounds I get from the 10th to 12th fret on G, B and E.

I usually find myself playing in A. If I'm on electric I often play in E and A (easy access to the 2nd octave), and I quite like B, too. On acoustic I like playing in E because it means I can work the entire neck (its a stretch 12th fret - 17th fret is fun to play on)

I find its easier to play on the neck where the strings and fretboard are :lol:

Actually anywhere between frets 0-17 usually....

I guess I like positions 8 through 12 the most.
