Lets say you are going to be gigging and will need a range of sounds from pristine clean, dirty blues, crunch, all the way up to soaring lead and heavy distortion.

So, Is it possible to do it all with one amp and pedals?

Or do you think it a MUST to have a good clean and a good dirty amp, and pedals?

Thoughts?

Depending on what pedals you're using, I think you can do that with a DRRI or a SuperSonic (my fave new amp).

Yes, it is possible to it all with one amp. I would go out and find the amp that gets the clean tone I want, then experiment with pedals until I find the one/s that that amp likes and sounds good for distortion.

You could try one of those modeling amps like the Fender GDec.

Oh yeah! My Mesa Boogie Stiletto Ace has pristine clean, blues to British crunch, Metallica chuga-chuga gain and a soaring liquid lead channel. It can do it all.

I've often thought about those fancy Mesa's... I always thought they were great.

I'm pretty partial to the cleans of DRRI and quite honestly, pedals really give me all I need for gain... I don't really play too much metal anymore, so that may be why I can get away with it.

What got me thinking about it is the top-notch rig Mike Fuller is running...

I uses a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. It has a great sound and lots of volume. And for sounds beyond the Hot Rod Deluxe, I can use pedals.

the Line 6 HD150 Spider II can do all that you ask, and probably more than you ever dreamed, and it costs pennies on the dollar compared to Mesa products. Of course, if you can afford Mesa, go for it. But my guitarist uses the Line 6 for gigs, it brings enough thunder.

Set the smp clean and use pedals. The only reason to bring more than 1 amp to a show is if you have a roadie or someone willing to carry it for you....Why do rockstars use stacks? Cause they have roadies....

my fm 65 dsp (currently on the fritz) could do everything. it had that classic clean tone and on the gain side it had every thing from a good british distortion to metal to jazz to the bluesy sound of a fender bassman or even the fender hot-rod series. my amp isnt working now but if you want to risk it go ahead

The SuperSonic is a good suggestion.

I saw Greg Koch demo it a couple years ago and it had quite a few sounds available through its various channels.

My main amps are single channel beasts, so I don't have ALL sounds available, but I make do.

Roland Cube 30X and a a few odd Dano pedals on the board when
running thru clean and not using the on board effects which I
reilly like because I think Roland hit them good sound wise. I like
the Dano tuna melt and Speech talk box.

'Only gig with bass (in church), but for guitar, 'am sissy-dance thrilled with Line 6 Vetta I HD / 412 slant / longboard, for going on 5 years. Freaking thing is amazing.

But disclaimer...

...admittedly, ears / musical soul are not sensitive / perceptive enough to truly understand the depth, breadth and purity of tone qualities and nuances some of you folks speak of hearing and experiencing.
