I just picked up an Ibanez Acoustic 12 String guitar for $160 -pretty impressed with the quality at this price point. I really didn't want to speand a ton of money. However, I think I may want to add a sound hole pickup down the road. I'm looking at a price range of about $40 to $60 tops -I've heard various good and bad about pickups in this price range. Anyone out there have any experience with any of these guys? I'm thinking specifically the Dean Markley/Seymour Duncan brands. I don't want to drill out the guitar, so the simpler the better. I know I'm not going to get a top notch pickup but I don't want to spend more than the guitar cost. Thanks for any input you can give me.

I have used the Dean Markley Sound Hole Pickups and they are pretty good.

Thanks Chet and Jim- one question I forgot to ask- I see that they make them in a single coil and a humbucker -have you tried both, and would you recommend one over the other?

Oh, wait, sorry, I goofed... it's the Seymour Duncan that I auditioned and really liked (the wooden looking one).

I've only tried the single-coil version... there's a humbucker version of that one, too.

I tried both and found the Humbucker one to be a little better sounding.

If you're interested theres a guide on how to make a piezo pickup system from a piezo in a smoke detector. Its on UG, I think I have the link somewhere.

poorboy, it's a piece of wood or similar material with cutouts on either end- they slide on both sides of the guitars soundhole.
And Highbinder, that sounds interesting-find that link- :)

Pretty interesting. One guy mounts it inside a cigerette packet along with a volume and tone pot, pretty cool mod and with some fine tuning I'm sure you could get it sounding really good :)

Thanks for all the replies- Highbinder I'm gonna check that video out. One of the things that I'm looking for as well is a place to put the cable instead of it just hanging from the guitar. I actually saw a pickup on EBay where it uses a clip to attch t he cable to the Strap button. Interesting.

On my accoustic Fender,,, I've got
a pick-up mounted under the bridge,,,
can't remember what brand as I had
it installed 17 years ago...

Anyways,,, the cord plugs into the
strap button...
