Just found out yesterday that all Best Buy locations will be closing down all the musical instrument departments some time in May, which will make for some pretty good clearance sales as well as negotiations for price drops.

Just thought I'd share this with y'all.

So does that mean FutureShop as well?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm not sure about FutureShop, all I can say is that speaking with the sales guy at the local best buy I inquired as to why over half the guitars previously on display were missing. He responded with "we're closing all musical instrument departments at all locations." I'm not sure if its just California or all of U.S.

I believe this is true nationwide--my local Best Buy music department has been selling off inventory without replacing it since last fall. The Fender Twin Reverb RI unit on display (practically new, the clerk told me nobody ever plugged into it) had its price cut from about $1400 to $600(!) in October, and in the two days it took me to decide to buy it--I didn't exactly need it-- with money I was saving for Christmas :D , it was sold! More than half the guitars and basses on the wall are gone. Think I'll hustle over there tomorrow and see what's left and what kinds of deals I can make...

Guess they can use the extra space for the new Samsung stores they're going to be putting in.

The Best Buys & Future Shops around here never have anything interesting as far as guitar stuff.
So no big deal.

went to mine yesterday. all the good stuff was gone. what was left was beat to heck by the weekend warriors. like so beat up one could not sell on ebay. so markdowns from, say $499 to $350 for something like mexican made blacktop jaguar were not enough. I told the kid working there that I'd give no more that $100 for something that beat up... he agreed with me but said the store is holding off on giving stuff away because they might be able to return to MFR for full cost (???).

how's that work?

I mean I'm talking this stuff looked like road worn series (but it's not). I'd rather spend $399 and get a new guitar than spend $250 for one that's totally beat up. I can get used in near mint condition for better price on ebay.

would be cool to pick up a blacktop jag just to mess around with, but I'd rather pay $450 for mint condition than pay $300 for totally beat up.

I did notice that my local BB doesn't have guitars anymore. All they have is a few keyboards, strings, picks, and other little guitar related things.

I did buy my first Squier guitar from there!

Yep, the stores here in North and South Carolina are doing the same.
What used to be an aisle of strings, capos, tuners, etc. is now just a big un-organized heap.
It used to be nice and convenient to know they're close by and they got Boomers if there's an emergency re-string required when everybody else was closed.
Haw well, yeah, let's hope they have some attractive sales.

They do and are willing to negotiate. I was able to talk down a blues jr. III to $340 without really trying. Now just trying to sell off some stuff to go back and get it. Remember, the clearance sticker price is still negotiable. Just make sure you get ahold of a manager.

Guess I'm going to best buy after work tomorrow. I saw a line 6 unit that was going for a good price at christmas time. So it must be cheap now. If they still have any left?

I never even saw one of the Best Buys with guitars since the time they announced it. Anyone know where in Houston I can find one? Not that I need to spend any more money anyway. lol

The people near it who already knew about it will have taken anything good. Don't waste your time driving if it's far away.

Like, in my city, I am aware that my best buy was a store that had a guitar section...lots of guitars too, like a mini GC. Well when I got there a few days ago all the stuff hanging high was gone. Stuff left was $300 stuff that is totally beat up.

now getting an AMP or perhaps some straps or other random stuff could be an idea. like mine even has pedals

The Best Buy that was near where I live closed down last year or more, along with many other locations; so this doesn't surprise me that they would be doing this as well. It never seemed like the best place to shop for gear to begin with, from what I read from reviews about it. It sounded like it was just as bad or worse than shopping in Guitard Center. I can only imagine this.

Yeah, my dealings with Best Buy have always felt more like Guitar Center than Guitar Center.
