The GC in Coconut Creek, is on the corner of Lyons Road, and Wiles Road. In the Promenade Center. Russ is a good guy in there.
Not all GC's can carry the same stock as other GC's. Mesa Amps for example, can be carried at Hallandale, and West Palm Beach stores, not at Coconut Creek.

Hmmm... I have always felt the opposite. At GC, there are always a dozen or so tweeners shredding the hell out of every musical instrument they can reach without a ladder and the salespeople let them and ignore them. ANY instrument at GC that is not bought within two weeks of being put out on the floor is a used piece of equipment IMHO.

The GC here in town, there's always an employee who me and a buddy refer to as "The Stalker"... Seriously! Everywhere you go, it's like within seconds, the dude is right there watching you or hounding you about buying the piece of equipment you are checking out.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist and not always into checking out guitars, you know what I mean?

1) I go into the acoustic room and pick up a nice Kentucky mandolin and start playing some irish jigs and reels on it. 1..2..3..4..5.. BAM!! The dude is right there and says, "Nice mandolin, huh? You know we have a deal on them right now and you can take it home today!".

2) I go into the bass guitar section and pick up a nice Fender Jazz bass, and start playing the bass part to "Whipping Post" by the Allman Brothers. 1..2..3..4..5.. BAM!! The dude is right there AGAIN and says, "From mandolin to bass! Do you own a bass? If not, I can ring that up for you and it'll be all yours!".

3) I decide to get away from stringed instruments (and The Stalker), and go check out the keyboards and digital pianos. My daughter plays piano/keyboards way better than me, and has taught me a few things to where I can actually play pretty good. I'm playing the piano outro to "Layla" on a nice Yamaha digital piano. As you would have guessed... 1..2..3..4..5.. BAM!! **AGAIN** The dude finds me and says, "You play keyboards too. Nice! That Yamaha has fully weighted 88 keys and is amazing. We have a good deal on keyboards if you're interested!".

I was thinking of going into the drums/percussion room, but I just knew that The Stalker would follow me in there too, even though there's a dedicated drum technician/salesman in there!

Has anybody else had anything like this happen to them? I mean, I'm not getting all weird or funny or nothing, but daaaay-um, you know? Get off of me, man!!!

I am now a fan of GC... BUYING OVER THE PHONE. I have found that they will always give you a sweet discount just like Musician's Friend does. All you have to do is ask. Then you get a brand new product that has never been touched by human hands since leaving Fender's factory. And if there is a flaw, you can easily return it no questions asked. I just got a modern player tele from GC ordering over the phone for sweet price, it arrived in about 2 days, in perfect condition.

Honey burst modern player tele is gorgeous, by the way. Chinese doing something right when they build this guitar.

M1KE...did it ever occur to you that maybe the staff of your local can sense what we see here...that you can't make a decision on what instrument it is you play? First it was guitar, then drums, then bass, then back to guitar, now back to bass, maybe they mistrust you for actions? Not throwing any stones, but people pick up on stuff like that, and as a business that might make them suspicious about your intentions? Just a thought.

And TBAZZ is right, the staff should be watching you, if that makes you nervous, then maybe you need to practice more so you have confidence in your playing to not worry about the salesman of GC.

Just some food for thought.

I never played drums. I am having trouble deciding on whether or not to focus on bass or guitar. I play both. And they don't just take a quick peek at what I'm doing, they literally stare at me until I put the guitar/bass/sitar/Mellotron or whatever I may have back on the wall. On the Gretsch I (appropriately) played House of the Rising Sun, (who can pick up a Gretsch and not play that?) which was the first full song I learned how to play, so I guess I can say I am pretty confident with that. On the Hofner I (again, appropriately) played All My Loving (who can't play Beatles on a Hofner? Come on!), which I have been practicing for weeks and have basically mastered. I am not uncomfortable or shy with playing around other people - as I'm quite the showoff around my friends when I play their favorite riffs  - I am uncomfortable with someone staring at me as I am looking around a store.

I've seen some great deals on used basses at GC. But..I can't support the store that drove out most of the great locally owned music shops here in my town.

At the risk of sounding like an old man, I remember when the mom-and-pop shops had a limited number of guitar, usually "second tier" instruments or brands (no Fenders, Gibsons, etc.) and gave you the hairy eyeball for even asking to play the one "good" axe in the shop--which was usually behind the counter with a "don't touch--ask first" tag woven through the strings.

One particular such establishment in my locale insisted that you show how much money you had on you--and if it wasn't enough to put the instrument on layaway, you didn't get to play it.

As much as I dislike Guitar Center (and the wanking tweens that wail away at full volume), they at least allow people to play their instruments...I generally use them to get a "feel" for a new/different instrument, and then I'll go buy it or check it out elsewhere.

+1...

I greatly miss the great shops in our area that were killed by GC--Jam Music and Sound in Arlington, C&S Music in Fort Worth, Earheart Electronics in Fort Worth...

I must have gotten lucky- my GC is pretty good. lol. We still have several smaller places around- but then again, this area has a lot of musicians, and a big music school.

Normally, most of by ching gets spent at Guitar Center- as they have the best selection, a clean well organized store, good sales people, and- like others have pointed out- you can play the instruments. Being part of a large chain, they will order it for you if they don't have it in the store.

There's definitely a learning curve to being a good salesperson. Knowing how much attention is too much, how much is too little, and how to "read" the customer to know which they want. It's a real art.

These guys have helped me out on several occasions. Most especially, selling me a $1500 Fender Am Standard for the price of a decent MIM. ( just because it was a 2011, and they were making room for the 2013's) The original case and candy were MIA, they gave me a nice RoadRunner hard case instead, and an aftermarket trem arm. They've given me expired sale prices on stuff too- well after the sale was over.

There's another famous store in town- with a HUGE selection of used gear, and some interesting hard to find items. I've spent a good deal there, too. The store is pretty messy, and the guitars can be rather dusty, but they'll let you try anything and the staff is helpful. They even own their own music SCHOOL. I like talking shop with the owners and the older guys working there. They tell the best stories, and this place is a regular stop for famous musicians when they're in town.

The others are mainly like what has been said of mom n pops- small selections of mainly low to midrange gear. I have yet to try EchoTone Music, though.

I love GC's larger selection, and the fact that they can discount the $@!& out of everything constantly. But, my local store gives me a good discount on everything because I'm a regular, the tech is open to discuss things and let me dig through his parts, and he has over 30 years in the game, the guys and girls working there are very nuanced with many instruments, they're always willing to compromise with something if something else doesn't work, their trade in value is higher, they allow me more time to bond with an instrument as I play it to see if I like it, they're willing to order things for me, and still give me the discount I'd normally get, and they allow me to come in and just hang out, as in not pressuring me into buying, just talking.

I sold so many guitars at the busy GC on 14th St NYC using the "I'm just bringing my guitar to test a few amps" technic :)

I was picking up some stuff at Staples yesterday, which just happens to be about 300' from our Guitar Center, so I walked over through the rain to see what used stuff might have come in. After checking the Trade-In Corner, where I found nothing at all of interest, I wandered through the amps. As I stood looking at the latest Marshall amps, I was struck by the fact that one of the medium sized combos had three of its nine shiny chrome knobs missing! I just shook my head, thought of this thread and walked out of the store.

And I generally look for music stores when I travel (Which isn't often)--but I checked GC's site and there are no GC's in Montana...

That's mostly because there aren't any PEOPLE in Montana... ( and why I like it there so much!)

I'll keep that in mind if I do get back there this year--or later.

It's been a long time since I was there...

No people you say?
