In my opinion any change whatsoever you make to your own guitar can arguably be called an upgrade. You have changed it to something that more closely suits your needs. That means that, for you, it's better than it was, hence an upgrade. The thing is though, once you decide to sell then those upgrades become modifications and if I'm buying used equipment I want it stock, not modified. To me all mods are downgrades if I'm buying. If I already own the guitar then all my own mods are upgrades. If I'm selling then I have to understand that others will prolly feel just like I do and consider my upgrades to be actually downgrades.

In other words, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

This is why I never mod any piece of gear unless it is reversible so I can put it back to stock condition if I choose to sell. I learned my lesson with my old Blues Junior when it came time to sell it with all those BillM downgrades that made my amp almost worthless.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

In response to the original question - Immediately!

Especially in terms of how it effects resale potential. There is always the matter of semantics when discussing modifications, upgrades, downgrades, etc. To me, it starts with "modification" which implies any change we make to our instruments (other than, let's say, strings) that deviates from the stock instrument at time of original purchase. An "upgrade" is a subset of modification, and is much more subjective (ie, eye of the beholder...). A further subset of upgrade is upgrade that actually increases the resale value of the instrument. And although alot of optimistic and hopeful Ebay sellers would like to think they have achieved this last subset (modification=>upgrade=>increased resale value), it rarely seems to work out that way.
