I know I said "I think I'm officially a bassist" but I was just listening to some Beatles and I think I may have changed my mind. I was listening to "Can't Buy Me Love" and when I heard the guitar solo (which George Harrison played on his Gretsch) I nearly shed tears of joy. The tone of that guitar was just amazing, especially when he plays those chords in the middle of it. Come to think of it, on my last trip to Guitar Center I (terribly) played a Gretsch and it sounded just like how it does in that song. Now I can't make up my mind between being a bassist or a rhythm guitarist. :x

Eric Clapton was a Gretsch guy during his Yardbirds days in 1963.

Unfortunately Gretsch has not released a signature model 6120 for him, though he really deserves one!

Why can't you be a rhythm guitarist and a bassist? :D

As a bassist who is also the chief composer in my band, and most bands I've been in I am always torn on whether to spend money on a guitar for myself. Luckily, my girlfriend and my oldest son both play and own guitars. So I usually borrow theirs. My son's Gretsch acoustic most often as the wide string spacing is the most comfortable for me. My girlfriend's Strat is a great instrument but it's like trying to play with half a neck. (I'm a P bass player) It feels weird.

Anyway, onto my point..

In a band I was in a few years ago our lead singer at the time played a little rhythm guitar. She was a lot better then she gave herself credit for. Anyway, the time came when we were gigging pretty steadily and we had to get her a better guitar. She put in most of the money we helped her with the rest and she got one of the Gretsch Electromatic series hollowbodies with a Bigsby. For a lower end Gretsch this guitar is stunning in both terms of playability and tone. So much so that when she "gave up music" for a guy, our then drummer bought it. That band broke up. I ended up with him in a punk band with one of the guitarists of the band I'm in now. That guitarist ended up buying the Gretsch. So if you want to get yourself a really good instrument. At Gretsch you can do it without going into serious debt.

As a bassist there are only two guitars I would ever purchase. A Fender 72 Deluxe Tele, and a Gretsch Hollowbody. It's tough if you are a bassist to sometimes justify a purchase on something you might never gig with. (atleast for me) However, Gretsch does give you some really nice options.

I'm always careful about rating guitars based upon tone on recordings. Considering George Martin's brilliance in the the studio, one needs to have reservations where the Beatle's are concerned. There's a certain piano solo which drove people to tears trying to cover. We ultimately learned that Martin speeded up the tape for that one. Anyway, a dear old bandmate of mine used to play a Gretsch Tennesean back in that day. Why not go for it?

As ZZDoc said, be wary of buying a guitar that you think will recreate the tone from a recording. That said, I've finally settled on 2 electric guitars - one is a telecaster, the other is a Gretsch 6120 double cutaway (like the one EC is playing above). Both are excellent guitars with different tones which is what I like and why I've kept them.
And as Texasguitarslinger pointed out....why not be both a bassist and a rhythm guitar player? Twice the fun :)
If I were you, I'd get the Gretsch.

Everyone has their comfort level. I've been playing Strats since before I want to remember. Even though I started out with an old Harmony archtop acoustic which I 'electrified' as best as I could, my second guitar was a '60 Dano double cut short horn, and the '58 Strat followed in '62 when my bandmate bought a Jaguar that year of introduction. Since then, save for the PRS's I've owned, these arch top electrics have always been too much guitar under my arm for my comfort. Even my awesome TelePlus gave way to a Clapton. Though I often like the looks of 'em, they don't wear well on this old man.

Longer arms...that's the answer
You're right of course...but for me the main drawback to a Gretsch (or other archtop guitar) is the lack of easy access to the upper registers of the keyboard. Didn't keep me from buying and keeping one, though 8)
now back to the topic at hand.......
