Well, they're completely different animals...

If you want rock distortion go with the DS-1 (or better yet a Power Stack pedal from Boss, like the DS-1 but it sounds better), and if you want metal go with the MT-2.

Look up some youtube videos, you should be able to hear the difference right off the bat. :)

As above - two very different sounds!

Also, what sort of gear will you be using it with?

The DS-1 tends to work a lot better when pushing an already overdriven amp - Run it into a clean amp, and it's a bit buzzy and cheap sounding, whereas if you already have a smidge of overdrive going on and you're nice and loud, it can really push the sound in a nice way and add plenty of harmonic depth. I have a slightly modded DS-1 on my main board which I basically use as an occasional lead boost when I'm after a specific sort of sound, and it does that very well indeed.

The Metal Zone is... well, haven't played through one for about 18 years, so can't really give an opinion. My memory of the experience is not a good one, however.

AGreed--what do you wnat it to do?

Personally I prefer the DS-1 and have used one for years.

I'm not a fan of the MT-2 for my playing.

But that's me.

If you're me--get the DS-1.

But you're not so--maybe it's still the DS-1, maybe it's the MT-2, maybe it's something else.

Or get one, and then later get the other.

There's no law that you can only own and use one type of distortion pedal.

Though I'm a hundred miles from the target audience for the MT-2 I'm surprised to admit I quite like messing around with it. At middling levels it has some sounds I enjoy, just for noodling purposes. Should I feel embarrassed about that...?

Hi hoxuzhe, welcome to the Forum.

I have some advice for you: why choose when you can have both - and more?

I have DigiTech's Distortion Factory pedal (I won it from Guitarist magazine) which models both the DS-1 and MT-2, as well as several others - DOD OD 250; TS-9; Pro Co Rat; DigiTech Metal Master; Big Muff. Obviously, those are digital emulations, so it's a compromise. But when I've A/B'd the Distortion Factory against some of the real pedals the DF really gets pretty close. You can tell the difference, but sometimes only just. The Muff simulation for example is a tiny bit warmer than the real thing - and personally I actually like the sim better in that case!

Anyhow. I've an idea the Distortion Factory is now discontinued, but they sold a ton of them so they come up on Ebay all the time at sensible prices. For less than the cost of a new DS-1 you can have both the pedals you're thinking about and many more in one handy box.

...Or just choose the DS-1. Obviously.

Cheers - C

I have actually heard quite a few people say that the Metal Zone is a rather unfortunately named pedal, and that it is surprisingly decent at lower gain levels. Can't remember enough about it from my brief twiddle with it all that time ago.

Had I not banned myself from buying any more overdrives or distortions (I've thinned my pedal herd massively over the past few weeks - down from 14 drive pedals to the aforementioned DS-1, a Rat clone and my beloved Carl Martin DC Drive, which so utterly superb that I might actually marry it one day) I might pick up a used one for a laugh.

Forum user Nikininja (who hasn't been around here for a while) feels so intimate about his Carl Martin Drive I believe his partner threw it out the door and threatened to talk to a lawyer. "There were three of us in this marriage -" etc.

They're very good pedals.

Cheers - C

Don't forget the MI Audio CrunchBox.

I believe these are now discontinued, but if you can find one, give it
a try as well :

I have a Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion pedal and sounds pretty good through a small solid state amp on the clean channel. What I like about the MD-2 is that it's nowhere near as one-dimensional as the DS-1. The MD-2 you can go from mild overdrive to balls-out distortion, and it also has a bottom tone boost which works great for chug chug metal riffing.

If you want a high gain heavy metal tone then I also recommend DigiTech's Metal Master. I also have one of those and it gives me the most authentic metal tone from a distortion pedal. The only thing about it is that it is a high gain pedal, so it's only good for heavy metal.

They are indeed. Great company too, extremely helpful if you have issues. Mine may as well be nailed to the board, other things change around it, but the Carl Martin never leaves. Weirdly, I bought it because it had a lovely nearly transparent gentle overdrive, but I never use it for that now - little did I know when you switch the fat mode in and crank the gain up a bit, it absolutely sings with humbuckers through a brightish clean amp.

I played through a random studio AC30 this afternoon for a session - the DC Drive sounded so good through that, I may have to go and buy a Vox. I was really quite shocked at what a good pairing that was, it was one of the best tones I think I've ever got in the past quarter of a century.

Anyway, I'm going to stop praising them now, as if more people discovered how good they are, they might stop being so cheap compared to other top notch pedals.

(Just to keep things on topic, you can pick up a used DC Drive for the price of a new DS-1. ;) )
