I've always been a classic rock guy who also loves the blues and I always carried within myself a self assured sense of pride that I was pretty good at it. Lately I've found myself in a whole different universe, playing bass instead of guitar and doing so with a group of hard rock, ass-kickin', iron pumpin' guys who are mostly 20 years my junior or younger and like to snowboard. It's been a challenge to learn up some of these songs, some of which I heard for the first time in my life when they played them for me at rehearsal. I just finished listening to an iTunes Playlist that I prepared for myself which includes some of the songs in our set list that I've had to learn up from scratch.

So here I am, a guy who specializes in covers of The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Bad Company, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, CCR, The Band, John Cougar Mellencamp, Steve Miller, etc. and now I'm learning up songs like the ones below. I having a bit of a chuckle at myself, this mid 50s grey haired geezer with the reserved and professional manner at the workplace shakin' his thang and rawkin' with the young bucks after hours. I don't know how long they're going to keep me but I'm having fun.

Hi BMW: well, it's good to get into your discomfort zone now and again. I guess.

I must admit I've paid fairly little attention to Tom Morello but out of your playlist that's the one I liked best. I doubt I'll be learning it, but kudos to you for doing so.

How's the snowboarding going?

Cheers - C

Ceri, if you want a REAL eye opener, try searching YouTube for that Rammstien song Buck Dich but check out the live version. Not suitable for public consumption on this board and prolly racy enough to curve your spine and grow hair on your hands.

Hey, c'mon! I believe I'm about five years younger than you, the grey hair is really getting a hold at the temples now: I'm considering taking up break dancing. (Considering...)

Life in the old dog yet, right?

Cheers - C

Well let's see. [Clickety-click-click] Oo - I never had to sign a disclaimer to watch a Youtube vid before.

... Uh-hu... uh-hu... uh-hu...

OK, I get it.

So this is what you'll be doing with your new band, is it, BMW-KTM? Hey, you have my respect. Or disrespect - which should it be? :)

It's all good clean fun...

Cheers - C

i am so jealous. that is the kind of music i crave to play in a band format. i don't mind some good ole classic rock but i am a metal head at heart. i really like the energy. you have fun with this. i'm sure you can teach these "young dogs" a few old tricks.
tear it up

I bet you'll have fun playing Rage Against the Machine tunes, they have some wild bass lines that really carry the song.

Actually Matt, I kinda think that's why they asked me to join them. One of the guitarists knows me from about 10 years ago when I used to be his mentor at work. I sort of took him under my wing and showed him a few ropes at the job. He's turned out to be quite skilled at his work. I also sold him his first pro quality electric guitar, my beloved Telecaster Plus Deluxe which he has since beaten the crap out of. I guess they've had some half hearted bassists before who had no meter and no desire to practice. The drummer told me I'm the best bassist they've tried so far by far and he wants me to stay with it. I have no problem with that. I'm having fun. Also, the Rage song was put on the set list at my own request. It was the only song of their favoured genre that I could think of, which of course I heard while Neo was doing his Superman thing after he stepped out of the phonebooth. I'd never tried to play it before but you're right, in many places the bass kinda carries the song. Same thing with that Darkest Days tune we're doing.
