here's my 2 cents worth- and i'm not going to be commenting on clapton.

there are many great guitar players out there who play music that doesn't interest me. the is also some great music with players who are not the best. deciding if someone is over-rated doesn't make sense to me. if you like the music, keep listening. if not-move on.

for instance, i can't listen to opera. that does not stop me from admiring the talent of the singers, but opera is just not my thing.

i think sometimes being a musician can be can be a curse. we tend to be more critical, instead of just enjoying the music

Great analogy...

I know this thread should probably die and I should let it go. But I want to lay one more thought out.
Putting aside all the other great work Clapton has done, and songs he has written. This is the guy that walked into a studio and laid down the lead for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", without ever playing the song before.
Now some 45 years later he needs to prove himself to people sitting in their underwear at their computer, questioning his credentials. And the OP wonders why some people got a little grumpy. Jeesh!

I've never really gotten into him much either. I love the blues, but there are guitarists in the genre that by many are considered to be "elite" that I have simply never cared for. Clapton is a big one. SRV is one of them. It even bleeds over into rock music. I can't stand to listen to Jimmy Page.

That isn't really a comment on their talent. Anyone who would claim these men to be untalented would be silly. However, I think lead guitar, and ESPECIALLY lead in blues music is a very personal thing. It's much more akin to something like a vocal styling then basic instrumental work. (For instance, Seline Dion and Mariah Carey are amazing singers, but I have ZERO interest in listening to them.) Since blues is based off call and response.

If you don't dig Clapton, then you simply don't like the way he tells stories with his guitar playing. There's nothing wrong with you. There's nothing wrong with having that opinion, either. I understood what you meant.

That's excatly what I think. When I'm listening to music, I have that mindset of just enjoying it or not, and not being critical. Honestly, I don't really give a $@!& if it goes a bit out of time, or it's not excatly in tune. I don't care about the key it's in, I don't care if it was recorded with a DIY home made guitar or a guitar that costs $100 000. If I can get the vibe, if I can relate a part of my life to it, I like it.

Now Eric Claptons music, I can't feel the vibe. Well, I can feel it, but just can't get it. Personally I think in a lot of songs of his, like SRV, and many other of those 'blues' guitar gods, just try to express emotion they don't have, or just over-doing it by playing generic lead licks. I can respect what Clapton has done for the music industry, and guitar players for that matter, but I just can not sit through more than two of his songs.
For me, there's this balance of expression and technicallity. He's just one of those expert guitarists that overdoes it and totally kills the feeling.

Mon cher Alain, the vid I've posted is solely intended for reference purposes and to encourage Drew365 to support the artist's work by purchasing the 24 Nights DVD as suggested by TC Rocker.

Cheers,

This has been one of the best threads in a long time. No arguements, lots of great conversation and a lot to think about and re-consider.

Lets hope this is just the start of the forums returning to their former glory.

I don't claim to be an expert on the blues although I listen to, studied, collected and played it. I do know this, Eric is loved and respected by all the blues greats.

In the sixties he picked it up put a bow on it and gave this wonderful thing back to us. Whether you wanna admit it or not it's the basis for everything you now play.

If you don't get an artist or his music that's cool. I for one never bought a Led Zeppelin album in my life. They just never clicked with me but I'm smart enough to recognize they were talented and that many loved em.

I just don't understand the OP and the what's so special question. If you've already checked out EC's catalog, videos, history etc. then there's nothing anyone here is gonna say that will enlighten you.

By the way I just saw him live last night and even at 69 the guy kicks $@!. Guitar playing was inspired and flawless. Voice stronger than ever. Great night that touched on every phase of his career. Blues classics, Cream, Derek and the Dominos, solo and acoustic.

Worth every penny.

I was at the April 5th show - it was amazing!

I was lucky to catch a "deal" on tix/room or I probably would
have missed seeing him for the fifth time.
