By no means am I calling him bad.

But I've seen a lot of his live performances and from what I've seen and heard, I feel like he is very over-rated.

Now don't freak out on me. I want you guys to prove me wrong -- post some videos or songs of him playing that demonstrate how amazing he really is.

I've watched him a lot with the Allman Brothers and in his own live stuff, and the other players always seem to get more applause and blow EC out of the water.

I see that a lot of you like EC and probably know of his best stuff! So can you show me a video or two of him playing that is awesome?

I realize a lot of it is personal preference (i.e. what one person says is good another person think is crap), but show me your favourite performances from him. Maybe I've been watching all the wrong stuff ;)

Cheers, and don't flip out on me :)

Nick

I completely agree with you. Thank you for posting this.

Edit: Clapton was in my city a few weeks ago. I decided not to pay $350 for a ticket. If John Mayer comes to my city, I'd pay $700 for a ticket.

The one thing about EC that always stood out to me is is taste. Kind of letting the song dictate what and when he plays. Sort of like trying to let the song take center stage and not his guitar. Some of his fill licks can simply be 2 or 3 notes, but they fit the song.

This is what I would say about John Mayer. Say what you want about his rep or personality, but that dude flat makes music. Dude is incredibly soulful *and* tasteful (his guitar playing), IMO.

I think this is a perfect example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IjkCDCGSMc. Everything about this performance is perfect (not !@$).

I love Eric's Cream stuff but never felt too much for what he did later. But like the OP, I'd be more than happy to change my opinion with a little help from the forumites.

That said, the OP asked for someone to post a YouTube video of EC at his best. So far, there's been a lot of talk, along with some expected outrage, but no videos, which is really all he asked for and I think he did it in a polite, respectful and courteous manner.

So let's see some videos!

Exactly. Tough to find one that will blow anyone away. LOL

EC is a wanker.

If that's your opinion, ok, but do you have a reason for believing or thinking this?

If you don't like his music, or his personality, or his hair, that's ok, too...but to just dismissively say he's "a wanker," smacks of extreme wankerism on your part.

I dislike the sounds that Yngwie makes; I have used the terms "wanker" and "douchebag"n describing his music. However, I also clarified the reason(s) I feel that. His lack of soul, his arrogance, his "image"/style of dress & grooming, etc., and his general demeanor makes me dislike Yngwie as a musician and as an individual...I understand/appreciate his technical abilities, but I don't like him, period...

...but as I said earlier, I've articulated my reasons for disliking Yngwie...why do you dislike Clapton?

SA, you and I both know that Clapton ain't no Mayer. ;-)

Yes, you're right.
John Mayer would agree that he's not fit to carry Clapton's empty guitar case.

First of all, liking somebody's music is a matter of personal taste--always will be! That’s why there’s more than one flavor of ice cream. I think what makes some artists stand out is the amount of influence they have among their peers, and whether or not they actually change the landscape of popular music. There are only a few modern rock guitarists who fit those criteria, and we all know who they are without naming names, but the list is probably no longer than ten or so.

You can thank a group of skinny, English white boys (Clapton, Richards, Mayall, Green, Page, Beck, and many more) for introducing mainstream Americans to their own roots music, guitar-based black blues, and for promoting these artists at long last.

E.C. lost a lot of fans when he went away from heavily distorted tones ala Cream, which not coincidentally is when he embraced the Stratocaster as his main guitar, and downplayed speed-runs-just-for-speed’s-sake.

Like any longtime recording artist, Clapton has put out some duds along with the gems. One of his most popular tunes, “Wonderful Tonight”, makes me gag every time I hear it! (But then, “Yesterday” is one of my least favorite Beatles’ songs!)

Clapton always was at heart, and still is, a bluesman, and he has concentrated more in recent years on improving his slide technique (Gregg Allman said in his autobiography that Clapton was fascinated by Duane Allman’s facility with slide guitar, because at the time E.C. didn’t play slide at all). He plays most of his solos high up on the neck for that singing, stinging tone, and his technique is as clean as a whistle.

Based on his current interests and output, I couldn’t imagine any guitarist younger than about forty having much interest in him, but that’s the way everything goes. I certainly do agree with one thing Drubbing said, there are enough guitarists and music out there that you don’t have to force yourself to like or appreciate anybody! I went through that phase when I was young, and John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra cured me of that! With all due respect to M.O. fans, of course  !

“Layla” is the only song I can honestly say I wish I had written—it’s perfect.

And “Badge” is still my favorite Cream song.

I have uncertain feelings about Eric Clapton. I don't dislike him at all, but I never really followed him, with the exception of Cream. I think it has a lot to do with Jack Bruce, though. It just the combination of those two playing together that seems magical to me. I wish they would do that more often. It doesn't even have to be a Cream reunion, either. One of my favourite things they played was the live version of "Cross Roads." I loved the interplay of those two jamming during the solos. I did like that show he did about Robert Johnson, that was on Ovation TV, though. I watched that a couple of times.

Clapton is scheduled to perform an all-acoustic jam with the Allman Brothers during the 4th CGF in April 12.

Rudorama writes an opinion with great insight. I agree that there's no accounting for tastes. Which is why I say that, examining contemporary artists as suggested, and following the parallel careers of both Mayer and Bonamassa, IMHO JB has eclipsed JM in more ways than just ability as a virtuoso guitarist and composer.

here's my 2 cents worth- and i'm not going to be commenting on clapton.

there are many great guitar players out there who play music that doesn't interest me. the is also some great music with players who are not the best. deciding if someone is over-rated doesn't make sense to me. if you like the music, keep listening. if not-move on.

for instance, i can't listen to opera. that does not stop me from admiring the talent of the singers, but opera is just not my thing.

i think sometimes being a musician can be can be a curse. we tend to be more critical, instead of just enjoying the music
