I like almost all of Clapton's work; I am less than enamored of his recent soft jazzy pop work (last few albums), but if that's what he wants to play, then let it rip; he's earned the right to do what he wants to do.

His "soul" factor and his willingness to share the stage with others makes him impressive as well...the rags to riches to drug addiction to sobriety story is pretty cool, too.

I think a lot of younger players don't "get" the fact that impressiveness of these older players was the fact that they did it "first."

The things that Clapton, Townshend, Hendrix, Vaughan (SR and Jimmie), Santana, etc., did may seem like "old hat," but it was groundbreaking for it's time and laid another layer in the foundation of music.

Ultimately, if you don't like him, don't listen to him...I do the same with artists I don't like.

PS I think Nick is mistaking some of the user's/Forumites disagreements with his opinions, threads and "jokes" (I put that in quotes because they weren't that funny) as hatefulness. Oh well, if you can't take it, don't dish it out.

The one thing about EC that always stood out to me is is taste. Kind of letting the song dictate what and when he plays. Sort of like trying to let the song take center stage and not his guitar. Some of his fill licks can simply be 2 or 3 notes, but they fit the song.
I know so many local guitar players that are really good. They play really great riffs and runs and they play them very well, but so many times they just don't fit where they place those licks. IMHO that can ruin a good song and waste a good guitar lick.

For those of you who aren't old enough to understand what EC and the other great guitarist of his time did for music, while you're looking at old their youtube clips also look other top acts of that time. Find the top 10 songs in the mid/late sixties. Listen to some of those songs. You'll be able to hear the difference.

To explain that a little, back then in OKC where I grew up there were only a couple of FM stations. everyone listened to the 2 top AM stations. You would never hear Jimi Hendrix or anyone like him on those AM stations. You had to find one of the FM stations and we called it underground rock. Only the songs played on AM would make it on the top ten list.

Nick

when i read this statement about how when he first joined everyone was nice and now many people easily get insulted...

i thought...i guess he has been a member for awhile and he has a perception that things were once better on this forum then they are today...then i looked to the left and under his name it says: joined: 15 Mar 2013 23:44.

okay so two weeks ago everyone was nice and now a bunch of people easily get insulted?

maybe you should think twice about the subject of threads you start...maybe you should grow a thicker skin.

get real...you may not like clapton...but you should at least realize how much he has accomplished musically over the last 50 years.

your thread is almost as silly as starting a similar thread with any of the following names inserted...chuck berry, keith richards, willie nelson, eddie vanhalen, roger waters, joni mitchell, bob dylan, steve cropper, pete townsend, lou reed, billy joe shaver, earl king, lightnin hopkins, david bowie, rufus thomas and beethoven. the list goes on and on...

you may not like a musician and their music but a thoughtful person can still acknowledge and recognize the contribution he or she has made.

here is a fun clapton clip with two other greats...

First off, I am a HUGE Clapton fan. He was one of the major influences of my early guitar stages. As Retroverbial and others said, he just washed out after awhile. Like too much cream in coffee.

There was a video of him playing "Don't Think Twice" at a concert honoring Bob Dylan. if you ever get a chance to see it, you'll understand why Eric Clapton is special. When he wants to play he still is one of the greatest, unfortunately, that's not real often any more.

I am a huge Clapton fan, not just his playing, him as a person, I read his book, etc. I mean everyone will have an opinion, I think he is one of the greatest guitar players ever, and he inspired many greats, now I cant say go look at a video, but seeing him live proves everything, seeing him in person is a total different monster, I can't describe it, anyone that has seen him live will probably agree, when he hits the mid boost on his Strat and goes at it, it really is just something else, cant describe it, but I met a lot of people who think he is terrible and horrible, its all taste I guess, and I might get a lot of sh*t for it, but I don't see why so many people like Hendrix, I think he is a great guitarist and totally changed how we look at rock music, but I honest don't like his music that much

Personally I like Clapton's music no matter the gear he uses onstage and in the studio.

I'm particularly fond of his guitar synthesizer days in the mid-1980s.

Clapton is special because he brings good attention to blues music. There haven't been too many 'mainstream' guitarists or artists who have been able to elevate the blues like he has, and he was doing it when a lot of the other players were still in diapers. I also think he's one of the better vocalists as far as guitar players go, that kind of makes him stand out.

If that's your opinion, ok, but do you have a reason for believing or thinking this?

If you don't like his music, or his personality, or his hair, that's ok, too...but to just dismissively say he's "a wanker," smacks of extreme wankerism on your part.

I dislike the sounds that Yngwie makes; I have used the terms "wanker" and "douchebag"n describing his music. However, I also clarified the reason(s) I feel that. His lack of soul, his arrogance, his "image"/style of dress & grooming, etc., and his general demeanor makes me dislike Yngwie as a musician and as an individual...I understand/appreciate his technical abilities, but I don't like him, period...

...but as I said earlier, I've articulated my reasons for disliking Yngwie...why do you dislike Clapton?

A little off topic, but I've heard some scuttlebut about EC using a Dumble the last couple of shows - can anyone confirm?

I am a big fan, and for me its about consistency, OK his music has not always been 100% amazing but with in his genre he has constantly provided good quality enjoyable music that well written, performed, and created a new spin on other peoples music.

EC is god?, well I am not sure about that but he certainly can play the guitar very well indeed and is most certainly at the top of his game with his peers.

I saw him back in the early 90's at the Royal Albert Hall and for each night he played a different style he simply blew the roof of the place, for me that was his best era.

I'll be on board with the 60's and 70's stuff, but he's turned into middle age white man blues. No grease, no dirt, no soul. Just the same as every other middle age white man playing the blues.

Yes and a custom Ferrari driving one at that!!! Have to say i liked him with the Cream reunion stuff, it was great. Also like the stuff he did with Stevie Winwood, great also. But i think Eric is better in situations like that; with other guys pushing him. I don't like his solo stuff much. Too MOR and as if he's just going through the motions.

But for anyone to call him the W word is bang out of order. Like him or not he's been a massive inspiration and influence on the guitar world.
