I so sick of the people who don't like Clapton but always seem to bring him up. If there's someone who I don't like I don't tend to waist my time talking about them. People need to get over it. I'm a big Clapton fan of all era,s.

Ive never been a huge Clapton fan but you gotta respect the man for his work, he blazed the trail for ALOT of guitarists. this is one he got perfect http://youtu.be/OIBxn8arV3w. In my humble opinion Joe Bonamassa is the best blues guitartist at the monment, the Live At Royal Albert Hall DVD is amazing , watch this one http://youtu.be/OIBxn8arV3w

What is so special about EC is how fluid his notes flow from his hands and the exacting precision he exhibits in everything that he plays. As others have mentioned, his time spent with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers is a great example of how great he was when he was a relative unknown. The Disraeli Gears album that was Creams first album is such a milestone album that ne one song can be singled out as being the best, all of the songs are great. His shredding leadbreak in SWALBR is incredible and actually sounds like the master tape was speeded up-it wasn't.

Clapton isn't over rated as a lot of people say.If he was over rated, the first ones to say so would be other guitar giants but he is always getting accolades from his virtuoso peers and getting invites to guest on their albums or join them in concerts.I think that his acceptance and the respect he's paid by other greats of guitardom is verification enough of his capability and standing as a guitarist.I'd be more inclined to side with the World's best guitarists than to pay heed to people who don't have near or any of the experience that they have.

I hope that I don't come across as being insulting anyone but basically all that I'm saying is that the best judges of virtuosity are other virtuosoes.

What's most interesting is that most of the responses have pulled favorite 'snapshots' out of a 50+ year career in the music business throughout which there has been an evolution in the artist's approach to his work. I have my favorite moments in his long and extensive catalog, but I would be hard pressed to put together a global assessment of his career. Bear in mind that, after Cream and Derek and The Dominos, his career crashed. It saw its renaissance at Live Aid, and he's been riding high and productive of his game ever since. Lucky at that, to say the least. I have no doubt that, technically, there are players who could outdo him, but in this business it takes more than that to survive. [Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan come to mind]. What ever worked for Eric, worked, and that has made all the difference.

I like his guitar synthesizer days from the mid-1980s...

...and his Soldano era in the early 1990s.

:D that is like saying"what is so special about Jimi Hendrix?"
these people were the first to do something and yes, we have all gotten better in hindsight, but these "forefathers of guitar did it first"
They opened the doors, and started an avalanche that continues to this day
Thank you Eric Clapton for the great memories!
