I appreciate Clapton but am not his best fan. I think Clapton is a lot like Petty. His songs are easy to learn... but doesn't change the fact that he did them first!

Not all of Claptons songs are that simple. One of my favorite Clapton songs to play, "Old Love", comes to mind. Really nice chord progression.

I love Eric's Cream stuff but never felt too much for what he did later. But like the OP, I'd be more than happy to change my opinion with a little help from the forumites.

That said, the OP asked for someone to post a YouTube video of EC at his best. So far, there's been a lot of talk, along with some expected outrage, but no videos, which is really all he asked for and I think he did it in a polite, respectful and courteous manner.

So let's see some videos!

Exactly the same here. His work with the Bluesbreakers and Cream was absolutely amazing, and more than deserving of the 'guitar hero' tag, but nothing since has really done it for me. I've listened to pretty much everything he's done since (I actually even quite liked some of the 80's pop period! ), and not much has really blown my socks off.

Contrast that with one of his contemporaries like Jeff Beck, who just keeps pushing himself and finding new ways to express himself on the instrument - I might not like everything he's done, but I respect him hugely for never sitting back on his '60's guitar legend' status and saying "Meh, I don't need to prove anything anymore."

I don't dislike Clapton at all - I just find him a bit bland by himself. He needs to be playing with strong musicians with differing opinions to get that fire going again - he's said that himself in interviews.

Clapton is famous because he's almost as steady and relaxed as B.B. King.

Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, D&D all amazing...

There is no doubt that Clapton is amazing, it's simply in the historical record.

But I do think he's overrated if you think about all the great git players out there.

Definitely in my Top 20, probably in my Top 10.

In my Top 5... ??

cheers!

Thanks to those who posted videos or directed me to works he has participated in, in the past which you really liked. I just watched all of the videos and will be sure to look up the rest of the works.

I can't get over the hostility on these forums-- when I first joined it seemed like everyone was nice and willing to answer questions but now it just seems like a bunch of people that just immediately get insulted when you ask them a question (with the exception of a few of you).

So anyways, I won't retaliate by insulting you back, but instead I think I'll just take my questions elsewhere. Probably join a Gibson forum or something, lol.

The thread wasn't a troll thread, and I don't think I'm better than clapton at all, as some of you stated.

Anyways, signing off for good!
Cheers, and thanks for the answers you gave me to my previous questions :)

Regards,
Nick

Pretty much ANY live performance during the 90s. IMHO Eric peaked during this decade.
28/11/94 was the actual peak.
Outside of the 90s for me it's Bluesbreakers, DATD and Cream 2005. The original Cream I can't get on with (what have I said!) ... I can listen to the studio albums fine but the live stuff just bores me. I forget what I'm listening to 10 mins into each song.

I dont think anyone was insulted or outraged but you do know how to search youtube and the internet. Lazy maybe but you can do it if you try. Discovery is half the fun.
