By no means am I calling him bad.

But I've seen a lot of his live performances and from what I've seen and heard, I feel like he is very over-rated.

Now don't freak out on me. I want you guys to prove me wrong -- post some videos or songs of him playing that demonstrate how amazing he really is.

I've watched him a lot with the Allman Brothers and in his own live stuff, and the other players always seem to get more applause and blow EC out of the water.

I see that a lot of you like EC and probably know of his best stuff! So can you show me a video or two of him playing that is awesome?

I realize a lot of it is personal preference (i.e. what one person says is good another person think is crap), but show me your favourite performances from him. Maybe I've been watching all the wrong stuff ;)

Cheers, and don't flip out on me :)

Nick

My interest in EC began to ebb after the Derek & The Dominos sessions. I loved him during his Cream era.

Never got into him, and I've been into blues-based music all my life - even if, when a kid, I didn't realise that's what it was. If you don't like the guy, I don't see the point of force-feeding yourself, there's enough of him on YT to make up your mind IMO.

My era was when he was pretty much a pop-rock act, and when I listened to his blue catalogue it really bored me, nothing he did grabbed my interest. JJ Cale was easy on the ear, SRV grabbed me by the throat, Gary Moore had a simmering rage, and a subtle touch, Peter Green nearly made me cry at times.

But When EC works with JJ Cale, they do really good things together.

Having little interest in his music myself, I think he's travelled an awfully long way on a reputation forged with 60s Baby Boomers, and younger players who have taken on the God mythology.

So, let me get this right. You need to be better than Clapton to have an opinion about whether you like him or not?

What a stupid response.

Same here, along with Blind Faith. After that he really went downhill IMO.

He's been doing it for 50 years. Does he really need to go out and prove anything. I feel cookieman's exasperation, what's the point?

Essential EC Listening:

John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton
Cream Live Vol I
Cream Live Vol II
Cream Wheels of Fire
Derek & The Dominos Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
Derek & The Dominos In Concert
EC EC Was Here
EC Live Just One Night
EC with Stevie Windwood Concert Tour...any of them, he plays his $@! off most nights

Listen with your ears, not your preconceptions. There is a reason why he has been called God and the yardstick by which all guitarists have been measured by for the last 40 years!

If those don't convince you...you can't be convinced.

That's your yardstick, and those of others who dig Clapton. I've largely ignored him for decades, so he hasn't been measured against anyone by me.

But the thread is pointless. If you don't get into something, then I can't see the point in forcing yourself to 'get' what others people do without them having to try.

Just listen to the music that does it for you.

Before I answer, I'd like to know how you define "awesome".

I'm about the same age as Eric and though I like some of his stuff, I've never been a huge fan. That said...

Eric Clapton has more than paid his dues.

If you don't like him, don't listen.

If you don't think he's awesome... who cares?

Eric Clapton has more than paid his dues.

This thread has a definite whiff of troll to it...

Well, I personally think Tom Petty is amazing... and he literally cannot play all of his hit songs in just one concert he has so many. But Tom is known as being extremely simplistic musically. He has gone on record saying that if a song is overly hard to play it isn't worth playing. He and the Heartbreakers admit on interviews they just don't do hard chords or complicated riffs. Yet I am sure many a musician wishes he had thought up Tom's songs first!

I appreciate Clapton but am not his best fan. I think Clapton is a lot like Petty. His songs are easy to learn... but doesn't change the fact that he did them first! I do think Clapton showed much ingenuity in the 60s and 70s with creating tones and effects by just modding guitars and amps and using them creatively before stompboxes and effects racks hit the scene.

Clapton also benefitted from being in the right place at the right time. He was a white British boy who could play and sing the blues when it was still a fairly new and novel genre in Europe.

Remember,,,,Music is not a competitive sport,,,,

Clapton always plays Clapton, He doesn't try to be anything or anybody else in his music,,That is why he's great.

Same can be said for most "Greats",,,,,,B.B.,,,,Duane Allman,,,,,etc.......
