I think one point being missed here is that a good portion of the creative types (musicians, artists, writers, etc..) have ADHD. They aren't flakey, they just have brains that work differently then the average person.

Kindly define parameters for 'musician' and flakey' and perhaps experience(s) which inspired submission of thread-start so reply may be thoughtfully draughted. Or not.

I've been accused of having ADD and ADHD but it has never been confirmed. Hence my clever signature.

When I went through a grueling chemo regimen to overcome the cancer Hodgkin's Lymphoma several years ago, it changed my central nervous system quite a bit. It's called "chemobrain" and basically Harvard Medical just determined the chemo strips the insulation off our nerves causing characteristic symptoms including ADD, loss of recall several things. At that time, that stuff all happened, and I also became much more musical. Like, now I hear the note when I'm singing much more vividly if say I'm singing to a note on a piano. Also, my playing became much more important to me. I didn't come wired like this out of the box, but now that's the way it is and I'm much more musical and more flakey.

I wouldn't say "Flakey"- I would say we are "Artistic" 8) and to some folks that may seem flakey. Most of the musicians I know are reliable, talented, not self centered, and a great bunch of folks.
Maybe you are hanging out with the wrong crowd

I've known a lot of artists, and the most accomplished were the really dedicated hard workers. They can seem flaky to those outside of their world, but very focused on one task. Then you have your wanna be artists that are just flat out lazy and don't do squat, not even art!

On the contrary... musicians and artists don't exhibit Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In fact, musicians and artists are usually capable of sitting still and paying close, minute attention to fine details for much longer periods of time than most people.... the opposite of ADHD.

Also, it is commonly believed that musicians and artists are more often depressed or bipolar than the population at large. That really isn't true either.... it's just that famous people have more attention paid to their well-being than the rest of us do. Truth is, the mental health of the class of artists is about equal to that of the general population. As far as their brains working differently, they may or may not be more emotionally sensitive, they may possess more of the quality we call "imagination," or they may be simply more sensitive to light, color or sound.

My perception is the same as that of Nick Dj: Real artists tend to be very dedicated workers.

I'm kind of wondering how a "flaky" guitarist can last through 6 years of the USMC and survive through the Scout/Sniper school.

That takes more hardcore determination, endurance, and pure willpower than anything else I know. That is far from "flaky."

Actually musicians, writers, painters sculpters all have higher rates of ADD then non creative types. The ability to pay attention to minute details of music is called hyperfocused and that is also a trait of the ADD brain. Often people with ADD are useless when it comes to the normal demands of life but for some reason are able to hyper focus on one or two things. I'm not saying all musicians have ADD traits or bipolar tendencies, just that of the approx. 2 percent of the adult population that has ADD, a majority of those perform better in the arts and clergy then sciences or business. So the ADD mind often drifts towards those careers.

Hey cryingstrat that's really interesting. Systemic chemo is getting famous for creating ADD-like effects in people who never had ADHD. I played guitar for years, but it was after i went through a grueling regimen that I became really really into playing guitar. Several impacts from the treatment have been verified including the ADD stuff. Hey, life's good, but to paraphrase Austin Powers, your information helps explain myself - to myself.
