yeah i hate that. its almost as bad as when people say"oh you play..are you good....can u play thunder struck ?" like being able to do hammer ons define you as as guitar player. i know people with no rhythm can play thunder struck.

One I get is once in a while is "can you play eruption?" The answer is still no. Not that I can't, I'm sure I could if I bothered to, it's just that I don't want to. Some people just have these songs they use as a measurement of skill. Kinda silly, but there it is.

i couldnt' agree more. especially when they think they are the best. i prefer it when people just say ya, but i am a beginner, or ya, but i just suck. As long as people speak the truth about their playing abilities, i am ok with it. I say that i am fairly decent, but not the best.

I admit I'm not a good bassist or pianist, but hey I never say I'm good or I'm better than that dude. But I practice everyday so I be better later on.

But I still love my Fender!!

Loving to play has nothing to do with how good you play. It's all about just enjoying making music. I'm just as proud of the hacker having fun as I am the technologist blowing me away.

Everytime someone asks me if I'm a good guitar player, it makes me want to show them what I know so they can judge for themselves. Cuz I don't like to sound braggy but I don't like to put myself down. You know what can be kinda embarassing? When people go through a list of songs asking if you know how to play them infront of a ton of people and the answer to all of them is "no". It makes you look like you have no knowlege of rock n' roll, or blues, or whatever you play. And the truth is, that's not the case at all.

I think we've all come across that at one time or another. I just reply, sorry, that's not the stuff I'm into. If they think that means I can't play...so be it. I know how good I am/what my limitations are. If someone thinks they can judge me without hearing me, then they're the one's lacking in knowledge, not me.

The world is full of people who can't play a musical instrument. It's tragic. Music is for entertainment - kids, family, self - and to be a role model. Do I play for other people sometimes, sure, but that's not what it's about. Practice isn't practice - it's playing music. All music is playing music. One hilarious moment happened many moons ago when I was in college and one of my friends, an air guitar player, was "jamming." I had been playing acoustic and open chords at the time and was invited into the air "jam," which forced me to explain that actually playing didn't translate into good air guitar. I still suck at air guitar, and holding the little fake guitar in Guitar Hero causes me to have an overwhelming urge to smash it to pieces.

You are tragicaly right. But... what is playing all about. I know people that know the theory and have the technics to play, but it's just not enough. On the other side, it must come from the inside. If u got the music in u, everything will do itself. About that, who is a better player than who... if we're talking about technics and basic/advance theory.. OK, Agreed. There are better players. But to measure all who play, using names is silly. U can't say Eddie plays and Gary sucks, just because his songs aren't cosmically fast. And once again with the risk of getting repeated, music (IMHO) is not about "who has the bigger ...you know what", it's about the pleasure of creating/playing it.

You just have to find what you're good at and concentrate there.

I have a few guitars, but I am really a bass player.

I like to play the guitar, I just don't think I'm good enough to play it anywhere but home.

That's what I have basses for. :)

I have to agree.
It seems to me that they just say that they play to get popular.
They think it is some sort of a "clame to fame."
I admit I'm not that great, but I have been playing for 2.5 years...
These people piss me off to no end! :x

I know how you feel. One of my kind of friends thinks he can play. he's got a standered stratocaster, a Telecaster thinline, and an Epiphone Les Paul 100.

oh ja...there some thing I could make be better...
scales, finger picking technics. When I play with fingers then like a
bass player automaticly, not with 3,4th finger technic.

So, the way is the target... :D
