Riley has inspired me. I've wanted some real feedback for a while.... go ahead, do your worst. I'm happiest with these 4 - Let me know what you think. thanks!

Hey there,

I listened to the four tracks you listed and here are my thoughts:

1. IFD -- Really heavy, really loud, and really distorted. Too distorted in my opinion, but hey I'm not a metal kind of guy so I don't know too much as to how much gain to crank up. But I didn't like the distortion, the riff was cool though. A little repetitve.

2. Windmill Under Water -- Same as above

3. Just a minute blues -- I don't know if you played two tracks and placed one over top of the other or played everything at the same time here, but I liked the 'backing chords'. The more solo-ish stuff seemed to sound a little off. However if you actually put more chords into the background stuff and mixed it up a bit, I'd love to solo blues to it.

4. And this too -- I liked this one most of all. It was nice and slow, had a nice sound to it and not too many effects applied. Again, it was a little repetitive but probably the best of the four.

I sometimes tend to discover a cool lick/riff/chord/progression and stick with it because I'm so proud that I made it up, but its important to remember when you're recording something as a full length song, you can't keep people entertained/interested if its the same thing over and over (in this genre at least. In genres like hip hop/techno, it seems to be the norm!)

Haha. Anyways great work, its nice to see someone talented taking time to record and share their work. Sounds great, keep it up and keep (us) posted.

Cheers

Nick

One Twenty Two.
Completely NOT my style at all. However I did find some parts of it that I liked. There's a flanging riff that alternates between two notes from about 0:24 to roughly 1:10. I thought that simple riff might go well as a background riff for something along the lines of a Rammstein song. At least that's what it made me think of anyway. Choppy timing kept me from listening much past that. Don't worry. Lot's of newbies have Meter issues

Pricing Caskets. Sorry but I did not like this one. I kept waiting for the song to start. It seemed like an intro to me. However you showed improved meter in this one.

Windmill Under Water. Too much distortion. When you use dropped tunings you already get an inherent heavy feel so you shouldn't need so much distortion. In my opinion that much distortion actually hurts the overall sound by drawing attention to itself instead of the riffs.

End Of The World. Practice this one up some more and re-record it and post it again some other time. I suspect it has promise but your playing sounds very un-polished on this one like you were unsure of yourself, nervous or whatever. I see you called it surf. Surf must have changed since the last time I checked. I liked the almost Rolling Stones kinda feel of it.

And This Too. I would suggest you play this one on the acoustic guitar. It has an almost retro kind of vibe to it that would sound very cool and hippy-ish if you used the acoustic.

IFD. Sorry. I couldn't get more than 5 seconds into it before killing it. I don't know if it's good playing or bad. It just sounds aweful. Really poor tone. Abrasively poor and not in the good way. Too much distortion.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

thanks, guys. :)
steely - not making excuses, understand, just explaining... the reason the second track on just a minute blues is a little off is because... well, A: i suck. and B: i was still learning how to work my recording program when I recorded most of these... I had the same problem with the first version of windmill, it's not even uploaded anymore...awful. I've been meaning to revisit some of these things , re-record the ones that are worth the effort. will definitely be making notes on what you all tell me here. :) And you're spot on about why it's so repetitive... I get way to into a riff and forget to change it up.
BMW - There's a reason I didn't include 122 on my list... heh... If you read the description, you'd see I made that solely to annoy the bejeeezus outta my wife... was playing with all the built in effects on POD farm and this just kinda happened. she can't stand any kind of techno, so I recorded it and presented it to her when she got home .... i was all "oh, i wrote you a song today" haha... good times. Windmill isn't dropped tuning, it's just a weird chord I came up with played up and down the neck... again using built in POD farm effects. Leslie cabinet, big muff, and some crazy jazz amp. IFD is my old russian big muff cranked. I loved that thing. you should read the lyrics i've halfway written for that one if you want abrasive.... I've been trying to re-record end of the world.... it's probably my favorite thing i've come up with. When I get some of this stuff re done I will let you know. thanks for the pointers! keep it coming, please!

Here is my take, and keep in mind that I like dark, intense, heavily fuzzed or distorted music:

Windmill Under Water - that was my favorite. I think it has the most potential to be turned into a very intense song.
Progress - I liked this one second best, because it was also intense and brooding.
Pricing Caskets - a little too sleepy for my taste, although it did get a little more lively around 1:34.
Just a Minute Blues - not really my cup of tea, but I think it sounded okay for what it is.
End of the World - good, although I have to agree it sounded more like garage rock than surf.

I kind of liked IFD too, in a noise rock sort of way. I have a Big Muff Pi too, and they can get rather shrill if you don't EQ them bass-heavy, but that's just a matter of personal taste.

Overall, I think you are on the right track and doing fairly well. I think the biggest thing you need is accompaniment and to keep blasting away - you will only get better and better.

thanks, man. I've gotta get a decent mic so I can actually record my amp and effects instead of using the POD stuff or running my effects through POD. I've spent a lot of time getting "that sound" in the last couple of years, since recording all those tracks... I can't wait to get it recorded RIGHT. and again, I'll be taking all the good advice I can get when that day comes...hopefully soon. ;)
