Hey guys, now that I joined this forum and have talked to a few of you about my style of play, I'd figure I'd ask what you think of my playing :P

By no means is this solicitation towards my "youtube channel" because I don't really have one, and prefer less views as opposed to more. I just want to know from experienced / good players what I can improve on.

So here is me playing SRV's Mary Had A Little Lamb. I'm not actually playing the correct notes but rather soloing/jamming to it.

My apologies for the annoying background audio :P

Cheers, let me know how much I suck!

Regards,

Nick

Hi Nick, welcome to the Forum. Keep on playing and you will become the guitarist that you want to become.

I'll be honest, I don't like SRV. In fact, I hate his music with a passion. Won't go into why, but given the syle you play in, I think you got pretty damn close.

Start using your left pinky. It'll strenthen your wrist and give more scale reach. Keep up the jammin' spirit and attitude.. Most look almost in shock playing for youtube.

Sounded good to me, especially your bends. That's usually the trickiest thing to get right with SRV style stuff too. :)

Hi SteelyRayVaughn ! Quite good , impression after a quick listening . Neither am I the biggest SRV - fan , though I've got a few of his records . They rarely get played.
In an answer to me in the telecaster forum - you said you were new to guitar ? So I wondered - for how long have you been playing guitar ?
Cheers !

Hey guys, thanks for the all of the feedback! Greatly appreciated, and I was expecting much worse :P. I play alone in my room for 6-8 hours a day some days, and all of my musically-inclined friends don't have an appreciation for SRV so it is hard to get feedback from them.

I will definitely start using my pinky more, it's a weakness I've ignored since I started guitar because it doesn't feel natural. Thanks!

And to answer your question A-man, I got my first Fender Squier Strat in Grade 6. I was terrible, learned barely anything, and stopped playing. It collected dust for about 9 years when I then entered university. My friend got a guitar and I figured I'd bring my guitar up so I could learn how to actually play. We both started on January 9th of last year, and I got some weird obsession for music in the mean time, making me compulsively play for hours upon hours, and just practicing over and over. I got pretty good by the summer (~4 months) when my amp broke down and I couldn't play anymore. I was then in Toronto where I bought my MIM Telecaster Blackout Deluxe model (the one in the vid) and a Fender Blues Jr III amp. I played that sucker into the ground, and have been playing for like 6 hours a day ever since ~ June. So about 1.1 years I've been playing Sorry for the unnecessary detail, I'm just bored and delaying working so I'd figure I'd tell you all my life story.

Cheers!
Nick

Nice! I've been playing for a bit longer than you and I'm nowhere near as good. I play for maybe an hour a day so that's what really counts! I wish I had the time to put 6+ hours a day!

Right, that was pretty good. And if this is how well you are playing after one year, I can't wait to hear you in another year.

Oh man thanks guys, it means a lot.

I've been looking for a way to start playing live. I've contacted Jimmy Vaughan, Clapton and Warren Haynes. All have turned me down but I'll keep on Chooglin.

Haha jokes. But seriously, I want to get a blues band together its just so hard to find people who are interested in the same stuff as me.

Is there an easy way to find fellow musicians?

That's pretty commendable for someone who has only been playing for only a year,I guess the SRV had the same effect on you that Jimi Hendrix had on me.The Beatles inspired me to become a musician and pick up my first guitar at 10 years of age,but it was when I heard Jimi's Are You Experienced album and heard all the strange and beautiful sounds that he got from his guitar.Hearing that album prompted me to spend up to 10 hours and sometimes even more every day to playing guitar.I also picked apart just about every one of his songs to try and capture every nuance of his playing, not only the riffs but the strange effects that he achieved by tapping the whammy springs, different parts of the neck, above the nut bends and incorporating the use of the whammy with two handed tapping-which definitely requires a flipped Strat.

About the only advice that I can give you-since you've come so far in such a short time on your own is just a couple of practices that I have found to be helpful. Firstly,I used to listen to each song that I wished to learn, many times over without even picking up the guitar, until I knew each and every minute detail of it and could practically pick up the guitar and play it right away. That way, when you did finally pick up your guitar to play along you knew what note was to go where and exactly in the right place.

Secondly is to try and concentrate on one song at a time-that way you can become totally focused on that song and even though it may get tedious,in the long run, you'll be able to play it much better and if by chance you do become bored or frustrated with it,then you can play something else or go listen to it again or some other music or even trim your toenails just as long as it gives you a break from it to gather your plan of attack in nailing the song like it should be played.

Anyway lots of luck and keep plugging away at it,so far you've obviously been doing everything right,so keep it up.It's great having guys like you- who really commit themselves to the guitar-in the forum, because you tend to inspire beginners especially, who become disillusioned and frustrated because their playing skill isn't progressing as fast as they would like. When these guys and girls see what new players like yourself have achieved by applying themselves,it demonstrates to them that it is possible to become a better musician,if you are prepared to put the time and effort into it.Cheers.
