Absolutely not - if you just do it for fun, and have no desire to make any form of career out of it, then go for it!

And as TGS said, it's also a way of getting to meet other local players and putting yourself out there and finding a foothold. Nuttin' wrong with any of that.

But when it turns into venues assuming they're meant to get something for nothing and not taking music and good players seriously; that's when it's time to think twice.

Like a lot of things, there's a balance to be struck.

I can relate to all that has been said looking back across nearly a half century to the time when I did most of my music. What I'm reminded of, in all of this, is a conversation in the round, televised many years ago, in which four or five of the top stand up comics of the day participated. They were reminiscing about what it was like coming up in the business. This was before things like the comedy clubs and the current stand up comedy TV shows. They were looking back fondly at what was known then as The Borscht Belt. A nearly deceased now, sprinkling of hotels and resorts throughout the Catskill Mountains of New York State's Sullivan County and beyond. The comment which struck me was that there were fewer and fewer places to go where one could be 'bad'. At some point in one's development as an artist, you have to get out and face an audience. I can tell you that I've rubbed shoulders with the likes of Richie Pryor, Richie Havens, Jose Feliciano, and the Blues Project at the times in their lives when they were just coming up. These people had great innate talent, but they were still working the coffee houses of Greenwich Village, and often at what we now call 'open mics' to hone their skills. There have to be places where one can do this in order to reach the point where one can command a just fee for one's work.

Getting paid depends mostly on whether or not you're worth paying, and that varies with the time and place! :D

Gregg Allman wrote about how many free shows the Allman Brothers Band used to play when they were starting out (with the lineup that eventually became famous), even when they were literally starving. They got paid whenever they could, but they figured since they were a band they should be playing, not sitting around waiting for the big gig.

OTOH, if a proprietor is simply using musicians to help him sell drinks, he can go spit.
