Hey Folks,

I've been playing guitar for about 1.3 years now, and I regularly play around 6 hours a day (with some on-and-off periods where I don't play for 1-3 days at a time).

Anyways, as you can imagine my callouses are well developed and I've never had a problem.

However just recently I started playing Couldn't Stand the Weather by SRV, and was doing that triple/double bend in that awesome riff on fret 12, and played it for about 4 hours.

The next day I woke up, and my callouses were almost completely gone -- they peeled off and didn't even say goodbye to me. So now it kills like hell to play guitar at the same caliber/speed as I normally do.

Why did this happen? After a full year of mass amounts of playing, I had no problems but then I wake up after playing some SRV and they hurt like hell.

Anyone else have this same problem?

Thanks for the help!

Nick

I think SRV had that problem sometimes. You can super glue them or lay of the SRV licks for a week.

Haha actually? That's cool. Are you trying to say that I'm the next SRV? Thanks man!

Haha but seriously, superglue sounds like a good idea, thanks for that!

Cheers

Did he use it over top of his calluses, or just over top of his finger skin, and never developed any calluses?

Hi Steely Ray,I do a lot of extreme Jimi/Buddy Guy/Albert King style bending and regularly bend from an A on the 14th fret of the G string up to an E-even higher at times, when really feeling limbered-up with little problem because I use .008-.038 strings and more recently .007-.038 Rev. Willy's Mexican Lottery strings. There is a popular misconception that light and super light strings equate to a very thin tone and nothing could be farther from the truth.People think that in order to achieve a heavy SRV type tone that they have to use strings as heavy as the mooring cables of a supertanker but they are causing themselves needless pain and wear&tear on their hands and fingers for nothing. You may have to increase the pickup height a tad and maybe do a bit of volume and EQ adjustment and set the intonation but most of that is necessary with any string gauge/brand change anyway but you can still get a very heavy tone. Many of the great guitarists such as Tony IommiJimi Hendrix,Billy Gibbons,Guitslinger.....lol,John Lennon and George Harrison and many others use/used the very lightest of gauges yet always managed to create tones that other guitarists envied.

I think that your exploding callous calamity would be practically nil if you switched to a much lighter gauge string.

Hey,

Thanks for your post!

I too do a lot of bending on that fret, and bend very high. However the reason I use heavier gauge strings is for the same reason that SRV did -- I tend to break my E and A string very often with low gauge strings.

However my playing is much more refined now, and so I will definitely try what you are suggesting. I actually use fairly regular gauge strings (Hybrid Slinkies from EB) but I might buy a pack of really heavy, really light, and everything in between. I'll check what sounds and feels the best and let you know how it goes!

But you offer some excellent points, so thanks for your input!

Regards,

Nick

Are you tuning to Eb? That makes 13's feel about like 12's. You could tune down to D and see if you like it. That would give you the feel of lighter gauge for testing. I personally like 11's at Eb and 10's at E on a strat. Add one to that for shorter scale guitars. 12's and 13's are great and all, but man that's a workout.

Man you guys are talking about some big bends. A-E is like a 3 (1/2) step bend, I don't think I could do that without a floating trem to pull up with the bend. That has got to be almost off the neck. A 1 (1/2) or 2 step bend is it for me, A-maybe C#.

I used to play 3-8 hours a day, in Eb on 13s several years ago. I still play a lot (but on 10s in standard now), and I still have the same problem you described. I notice it happens to me more when I miss a couple of days playing and then jump into an extended practice session or after I've just had my hands wet and then pick up a guitar. Sometimes it's worse than others, but in any case the callouses usually return after a day or so of pain. I play through it anyway without the super glue. I don't like the feel of super glued fingertips very much.

Happens to me regularly!

When playing lots of bends, the calluses are peeling off to a degree where I get stuck on the frets when sliding up the fretboard.
I then have to cut it all off to smoothen the fingertips and have to build up new calluses, which can be painful during the first one or two days.

Sometimes they are hanging off my fingertips in frazzles like a torn rag!

I'm a little lazy regarding using lots of body lotion to soften the skin on my fingertips. I've heard that frequent creming of the finger tips prevents that much longer, but I simply don't care. When it happens, I simply remove the frazzles ---- done!

Just a word of caution...

SRV never used super glue to replace callouses. He used it to repair nail splits...when the finger nail separates from the skin beneath the nail...very painful if you've ever had it happen to you. I read this in a Guitar Player article about 20 or so years ago. I don't think that method of repair was good medically but it worked for him.

I don't know of any other way to replace a callous other than build up another one.

I'm not a heavy player - touch or hours - but I haven't had a problem with sore finger tips for years and years. My fingers are not hugely callused, but enough.

- Except when I play bass for about half an hour. Man, there is something about bass strings that just rips my fingers like I've been at them with an orbital sander. OUCH!

...I'm not a bass player, as you can tell.

Cheers - C

Actually, SuperGlue was originally developed as a field "stitching" for Vietnam-era soldiers, so they could repair a cut or tear temporarily before getting some real medical attention...the soldiers noticed the 1001 other uses, and the product went mainstream.

...and there's a form of Superglue that's still used in surgical applications today, so medically, there's nothing wrong with using it for callouses, fingernails, or minor cuts on your fingers. Just don't get it in your eyes--that is bad!

I was involved in a case of a patient who used cyanoacrylate adhesive [Crazy Glue etc..] inside their denture to keep it in place. Uffff!!! Do not ask what was involved in removing same.......
