Two people. Buddy Rich with his one hand drum roll revealed to me the awful truth that I was never going to be the finest swing drummer in history no matter what.

Just then, Mark Knopfler came along with Sultans of Swing and I thought, hello, I can actually sort of hear how that works. Maybe my fingers could do something with a guitar too...

Cheers - C

Iron Maden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pink Floyd,Kiss...... I listened to all 70's and 80's metal bands growing up and thought it would be cool to learn to play. Plus a friend of mine played bass.

Originally it was Mark Knopfler that made me want to play guitar1
when i first got realy interested in music all i listened to was Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler! and since my dad plays guitar i asked him if he could learn me something, so he did learn me the basic chords and got me my first guitar an nylon string classical guitar wich i still have, very comfortable neck on it:)

And the came Pink Floyd, i was instantly hooked!
i can remember walking trough the living room, my dad had just put on P.U.L.S.E and they were playing Shine on, i just stood still and watched whilst Gilmour bendt those strings! i was amazed and instantly thought "this is what i want to do!"

And with the years i have been more and more into Blues so thats my story 8)

I was 12 and saw the red hot chili peppers live,

Brought a bass within a month,

As for guitar, To add to my bass playing being able to noodle around on the guitar would be good to help my understanding. Then 2 months ago so the strat i now own for sale and brought it, couple weeks later got my blues deluxe.

For me it was John Lennon. I know, he wasn't much of a guitar player....but in 1970 he was about the coolest dude on the planet.

No doubt about Lennon! But it was the Beatles on black and white tv for me!! And the fact my dad did not like it at all!!  Some things never change, they just continue the circle!! 8) Please excuse me as I posted earlier in this thread! Brain cells decreasing I guess!

I'm 41, my parents were in high school in the late 50s and early 60s. They had A LOT of records from that period.

My mom LOVED Ricky Nelson :D and had a couple Albums but almost every 45 he ever did.

My Dad liked The Ventures :D , so as a small kid, These fantastic records were playing. I remember asking my mom "what's that sound?"
She said it was an electric guitar. I said I want to play one.

I started taking lessons at 7 years old, got my first guitar at 8, I never looked back. I also got into The Beatles at age 7 and that was it.

I have 28 guitars and basses. #29 will be here Wednesday :D :D . That Fender sound hit me hard at a very early age

I don't know--as far back as I can remember I wanted to play the guitar.
I got a decent quality plastic one for Christmas as a kid--it actually had 6 strings--and it worked.

But guitar playing was put on hold for a detour through piano--and then I came back to it when I was 11.

But during the detour I always saw it as a detour--that one day I would learn the guitar. So it wasn't like I forgot about it and someone made me come back--I always wanted to come back to it.

But I don't know who, what, how, why for the initial desire. It came at a very early age.

Billy Corgan became my biggest hero, so I decided to play guitar like he does. I loved it immediately, and got awesome feedback from my teacher.

So now its work your way up to a Corgan Strat! That's the way ya do it!!

For me, it was Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry. I guess I'm a tad older than Hopkins. :P

For me it was John Lennon. I know, he wasn't much of a guitar player....but in 1970 he was about the coolest dude on the planet.

I played in a garage band back in the 60s...I was John Lennon! So, we had the same inspiration. My family could not afford a guitar back then, so I used a friend's 1965 Standard Stratocaster that cost $200 new. We left it on the garage floor, and my friend's mom ran over it! That guitar would be worth $20,000 today!

I bought my first guitar two years ago, and have made up for lost time. My guitar playing chops are weak at best, but I really enjoy it. I try to practice every day. Notice in my signature that I own a John Lennon model Les Paul Junior, #2 of 300. I also bought my first Strat on Thursday!

On the brighter side, the value of everyone else's Strat just increased by one at that moment...

You think you have a story :!:

Some day, when I have time, I'll reiterate again what CBS-Fender did with my '58 Strat 39 years ago when I sent it back to California to be refinished

Doc

Some of us don't need that reiteration, Doc. That one's seared into the memory. Amazing what a loyal customer you have remained even after that debacle.

But others, I'm sure, would be eye-wateringly fascinated to hear the story...

Cheers - C
