Who was it that made you save your lunch money or beg your parents to buy you that first guitar? Was it a friend? A band or guitar player?

For me it was John Lennon. I know, he wasn't much of a guitar player....but in 1970 he was about the coolest dude on the planet.

Hi - this is a crazy story - I really wanted to play the piano - but we had none - so after pestering my parents I was given guitar lessons - since we had an old steel string guitar with strings about a cm up at the 12. fret! You can all imagine it was heavy work for a beginner. I was about 12 and my parents thought it was a total waste of good money. Well - that was my first and only tutoring, but I'm still at it.

I was 12 and wanted to be a "hair band guitar god," so I asked for a guitar for Christmas, that year I got my Squire Strat, and I thought I was bad $@!

my dad, he passed away in 2001 and wanted me to carry on the Fite (my last name) legacy. He was the fastest guitar player in Oregon and scared the hell out of every player, including his friends Willie Nelson and Les Paul. I'm working on continuing the legacy. got my first guitar in 2002 didnt start to play until 2004. now i have 5 working on 6 or 7 guitars now.

In the eighth grade i got really into rock classics, such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rolling Stones, and black sabbath. after hearing such awesome music, I figured I'd like to play that and be a rock god. now guitar is one of my greatest interests

1961 or 62 - heard the ventures for the first time ... that sold me on the guitar.
mom & dad bought me a HORRIBLE $30 guitar (DECCA !?) and a 5 watt amp. the string were so far away from the fretboard, that i bled. didn't like that too much so i put it away for about 8 years. hooked up w/some friends who needed a bass player, so i started again.
30 years later, i have 6 guitars: Univox bass (P-bass copy from the early 70's) Epi 12-string (same vintage) Epi les paul, Epi ej200ce jumbo acoustic/electric,Epi Sheraton II - thin semi-hollow body (very sweet) and a new fender strat maple neck- sapphire blue w/gold hardware.

i'll never make any money at it, but i DO have fun.

About 4 and a half years ago I was in 8th grade and got into Jack White and some White Stripes stuff. That was the first time I was ever interested in guitar.

My family had an acoustic and freshman year I bought a Squire for the sake of having an electric. I was never really motivated to learn until I started listening to some of John Mayer's technical acoustic work (and no, not the poppy crap). That got me started actually learning to play, and then I heard him play an electric. That led me to get interested in some of his inspirations; I discovered Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Clapton, SRV, BB King, Albert King, Freddie King; where the real music is. And I haven't looked back since.

Jimi Hendrix is the reason why I started playing. But Stevie Ray Vaughan is why I stuck with it and never quit.

I was 14 and was first playing the drums. My brother got a guitar. When he wasn't home, I'd sneak it out and started checking it out. I soon traded my drum set in for my first guitar (a Hondo) and amp. So it was my brother who indirectly influenced me. 8)

Believe it or not, it was seeing Lou Diamond Phillips in La Bamba when I was 15 that initially got me interested in playing guitar. That scene where he's playing La Bamba at a show with his stratocaster--well, to me it was pretty cool. Some time later I went with my friend to an awesome Aerosmith concert and we both agreed afterwards that we needed to get guitars and get a band together. The band never really happened...but I'm still addicted to playing my guitar and still hope to be as cool as Joe Perry some day!
