Again, I'll say that the electric jams were out of it. They were just me messing around, in no way were they supposed to be my best playing. Hell no! I just recorded those to show my friends the potential of my big muff, that's all. I'm actually quite suprised nearly everyone has taken them serioiusly. They're not, trust me. I took them down as they were no longer in need of use, and they could be interperated as a serious jam, when obviously they're not.

Anyway, all of your responses have been pretty much what I predicted. We all have different sounds in our heads that we're trying to get out. It's just a matter of finding out what type of people will like it, or will absolutley hate it.

Ricky Nelson said you can't please everyone, you gotta please yourself. Have fun. :D

Riley,

Long time no hear. I liked them overall. As mentioned the timing or something was a bit off, but I understand where that is coming from. I hope if I have the issues you have had in your life I could still play.

Your voice sounds like (and please do not take this as as it is meant as a complement) Kurt Cobain. Try to emote a bit more, sing and play closer to the recording device, or get a mic.

Keep playing and writing.

Grunge is alive and well and living in Australia!

I liked Acoustic Jam and Pest very well…I have to go back and listen to the piano tune now, I didn’t get to do that.

The electric stuff was cool, too—with the distortion over the top and out of control…I’ve always thought that guitarists who did that kind of thing had some bravery (Jack White, Dan Aurbach) in their playing, and I hear that in you, too. I realize they were just sound samples, but I thought they had something.

Here’s the criticisms (meant to be constructive):
(1) Buy a vocal mic and some sort of preamp so we can hear your voice…I think we missed out on some good lyrics because your voice is buried deep in the back of the mix.

(2) As you well know, I prefer a good vibe to technical accuracy and prowess any day. I’d rather listen to a drunken Hound Dog Taylor for all eternity than listen to one “perfect” Yngwie song…however…

Tuning is important, no matter what you think—even the guys who used dissonant chords and progressions (Cobain, Lou Reed, Jack White) keep/kept their guitars in tune. “Draining Books” sounded promising, except the warbling and poorly tuned guitar made it a hard listen. We stuck it out to the end, but even Armadillo ‘Tween said, “The guitar needs tuning…”

…and yes, there are bands that play out of tune…and most of those bands will always sound “wrong.” The few bands that have made that work for a particular song or album can rarely make it work all the time, so tune yer axe.

(3) The repetitive nature didn’t necessarily turn me off, but some changes in dynamics, tempo and perhaps a bridge or chorus would make them more interesting. Dylan, Cobain, Springsteen, the guys from Pearl Jam, even ZZ Top all put those little variations within their songs that make them interesting and unique…all of them use “hooks” in their craft, and as John Popper so aptly said, “The hook brings you back…”

(4) I like the fact that you have the desire to play something that is no longer “in the norm,” and you do it with passion. Keep it up.

In conclusion:
I think you have a lot of talent and pretty well developed sense of style. Many people give you credit for fighting through your challenges (I do, too)…but I won’t give you any extra credit, because there are too many players who have used their challenges/disabilities to develop their own thing.

Tommy Iommi, Django Reinhard, Jerry Garcia, Jim Croce, even our Forum Mate Guitslinger have overcome harsh physical circumstances to create great and unique music…and since you have done the same thing (taken a negative, fought it and pushed forward), I applaud your effort and ability...but I won’t give you any “extra” props, because they aren’t necessary…stroke or no stroke, you rock, Riley, and I mean that in the most sincere and positive way it can be taken.

That big muff sounds pretty nasty (in a good way!) I understand its not for everyone because of the highly distorted tone, but I think it has the potential to sound very cool.
