I used to own a bunch of forums for when I was into web design.

It's not people that are posting, it is bots that are posting.

Usually if you look at the name of the poster its something nonsensicle like "asdh78d" or "Gerwaptruy" something that's either a mix of letters and words or a logical progression of letters which amounts to no real word.

Anways, the reason they do it is because Fender doesn't have any CAPTCHA verification when you make an account here.
Ever wonder what that "Enter in the letters and numbers you see in the box below" is? Its to verify that you are human, because bots which are created by humans have yet to have the capability to scan images and derive characters from them.

Usually they just advertise porn, drugs, or other websites. Lots of times in other languages.

Anyways, I just wrote all this to inform you all in case you didn't know, because after reading the above posts, I thought maybe you guys thought it was human spammers. All it is is a program that scans through forums, checks if it can make an account easily under a name which isn't taken (hence the gibberish), then post mass amounts of garbage.

So there you go. Replying to their posts doesn't 'encourage' them or anything because its more of a one-way communication system. All it does is bump their post to the top, allowing more people to see it.

So yeah, don't reply.

Cheers

Nick

I highly doubt there is someone out there creating these stupid threads intentionally for this forum. The thing is this will happen to any forum that doesn't have the verification tools. So if anyone thinks that this is the work of an individual who has time to waste sitting at a computer desk with a coffee deciding to spam the day lights out of us...

I can identify the spam-bot threads quite easily now.
The threads appear in groups of three with nonsensical user names. The thread titles are never guitar related. Rarely do I even click on the thread these days.

To reitterate a previous comment of mine.....content is often unknown until the thread is opened. I do not recall 'bot' spamming in these Forums. Rather, near-do-well mischiefmaking orks and trolls. One would not want to ignore a new contributor on the basis of first impressions of subject title. These more often than not, appear legitimate in nature. :?

Hi Doc: right this second a certain "toastkhaye" has posted a row of threads with titles taken from random sentences in the news:

That's an example of the machine generated bot-spam SteelyRayVaughan and others are talking about. There's been a he-e-eck of a lot of it arriving in recent months: it's easy to spot and Brad deletes it regularly, but it sometimes comes in flocks and clogs the index pages to a tiresome degree.

From the sender's point of view the objective is to get us to click on the links it contains. At the least those direct us to sites we'd do better to avoid: fake drug sales, porn and the like. Worse, it can also be a route to dangerous malware which you might not even notice infecting your computer - don't click those links, folks!

Looks like 'they've got our number'. Perhaps it's time for a CAPTCHA verification firewall.

Yep: 'fraid it's probably the least worst solution at this stage of the technology.

If ya'll recall, when Brad last discussed the upgrades being made to the forum he did say that better spam protection was coming up. He's definitely aware of the problem. We just need to give him time to come up with what I am sure will be his best solution instead of just a solution.

I think spamming that link? How ironic.

If you can't figure out who "tinytownguitars" is, think hard. He has been reported to Brad.

That Toppscore guy, or whatever his name was? I haven't followed a lot of things on here for a long time, but I remember seeing a post a while back about him being banned for whatever reason.

Not Toppscore, this dink is always on about these guitars, and regularly harasses the forum, especially Xhefri. last known moniker was hatfield, but he's had several, including one very similar to our buddy Bill.

Oh, OK. I must have missed out on this. It was almost a month since I've read the Fender Lounge forum, and I usually browse that or the bass amp section, since I've posted there the most.
