I never understood the purpose of spam. Do they actually expect to accomplish anything anything than other than annoy people? I can't imagine that they could effectively sell anything to anyone. Then again, unfortunately there are people that gullible to fall for these things. I've noticed in the past (I don't read anything anymore and only did a couple of times) that some of these spam posts are bizarre and non-nonsensical. It's usually some random quotes from some news articles put together. Go figure.

States of mind being the same, far less damaging than unloading 150 rounds of ammo in a movie theatre, I should say. :?

SPAM works on the principle that if you throw out a few hundred-thousand fishing lines, even in the worst waters, you are bound to get at least 1 or 2 fish (suckers). Now make it 1 or 2 million fishing lines.... it starts to add up to a lot of fish.

Well, that would make sense. Of course, that's been going on long before there was internet or computers. They had snake oil salesmen back in the 19th century. Who knows what before that. I imagine a lot of this is programs that send stuff out automatically, especially the ones we've gotten here. Either that, or someone has a lot of free time on their hands to type out and post and send out this random stuff. I couldn't imagine someone dwelling in their parent's basement mailing out $@!&# extension ads to random strangers all day long. But then again...

The trial is not getting daily coverage over here but appears in the headlines now and again when there is something juicy to report. Latest is that one of the would-be assassins kept a diary detailing how he planned to go about murdering Joss Stone, as well as naming several other pop stars he was interested in. More here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-21883371

The trail is expected to last about three weeks.

Incidentally, I have a country house about 20 miles from Stone's place. She says she seldom used her burglar alarm and often didn't even bother to lock the door at night. Personally I'm a little more careful than that, but for sure it is that kind of place. Not the sort of spot you expect to be visited by people carrying Samurai swords and guns with silencers (I believe her stalkers didn't actually get so far as aquiring the weaponry they fantasised about).

Sadly, I suppose she's going to have to be a bit more cautious from now on.

Cheers - C

I used to own a bunch of forums for when I was into web design.

It's not people that are posting, it is bots that are posting.

Usually if you look at the name of the poster its something nonsensicle like "asdh78d" or "Gerwaptruy" something that's either a mix of letters and words or a logical progression of letters which amounts to no real word.

Anways, the reason they do it is because Fender doesn't have any CAPTCHA verification when you make an account here.
Ever wonder what that "Enter in the letters and numbers you see in the box below" is? Its to verify that you are human, because bots which are created by humans have yet to have the capability to scan images and derive characters from them.

Usually they just advertise porn, drugs, or other websites. Lots of times in other languages.

Anyways, I just wrote all this to inform you all in case you didn't know, because after reading the above posts, I thought maybe you guys thought it was human spammers. All it is is a program that scans through forums, checks if it can make an account easily under a name which isn't taken (hence the gibberish), then post mass amounts of garbage.

So there you go. Replying to their posts doesn't 'encourage' them or anything because its more of a one-way communication system. All it does is bump their post to the top, allowing more people to see it.

So yeah, don't reply.

Cheers

Nick

Our 'spammers' do not appear to be bots. They are more like warped 'need to get a lifers'.

I've responded to a lot of these spammers by telling them that their spam has quite the opposite of the desired effect because people will most certainly not want to do any business with a company that has such unscrupulous crass behaviour and are so void of any code of ethics that they would take advantage of a completely unrelated forum and use it as a form of free advertising to promote their products or services and would avoid them like The Plague.I could never for one second think about doing any business with a company that was so unethical because such a company would most certainly have no qualms about ripping people off.

To reitterate a previous comment of mine.....content is often unknown until the thread is opened. I do not recall 'bot' spamming in these Forums. Rather, near-do-well mischiefmaking orks and trolls. One would not want to ignore a new contributor on the basis of first impressions of subject title. These more often than not, appear legitimate in nature. :?
