that neck looks really nice. though for me, the wood grain of the body is way too bland for a natural finish. id be painting over it no doubt.

It was originally painted white blonde (my absolute favorite Fender color!), but the first owner for some unknown reason decided to strip it and finish it natural. I still may end up giving it back it's original finish someday, but for right now I'm just going to leave it as is.

We tested it the other day to see if we could find out what it was refinished with, and it actually turned out to be nitrocellulose lacquer! Kind of surprising, since I assumed it would poly or something cheap you'd find at a hardware store.

Ha! Interesting thread.

I love that you're keeping the bridge pickup square to the others and not trying to angle it like a Strat single-coil. That never looks quite right with a P90 to my eyes. Three in a line is the way to go.

I also think this decal was very cool. Something similar to match would be stylish:

First week of Spring and a new build thread pops up, my favorite time of year. Great concept for the project TGS, looking foward to many photos.

I've got to give Warmoth some credit here, my pickguard arrived today! And I ordered it less than a week ago! Now all I need are some screws from the hardware store (to anchor the P-90s) and I'll have all the parts I need to get started. I'll probably begin on it sometime next week.

This non-instagrammed version gives you a little better idea of the color.

Well, here we are nearly three months later and the build has finally started! :D

The first order of business was to give the body an 80's style swimming pool route to fit the P-90s. Obviously, this wasn't going to work!
Image

Robert, the repair tech, taped off where he needed to route and then covered the body up with that folder to protect it.
Image

Robert had to jury rig the vacuum to work hands free, notice the blue painter's tape! He finished up the details with a dremel tool.
Image

All done!
Image

Next, he shielded the guitar. Apparently shielding a guitar with a swimming pool route is a lot easier than a normal Strat.
Image

We finished up for the day by getting that jack soldered and installed, and installing the bridge assembly. All that's really left is getting the neck on and the electronics installed from here! It could be done in a week or less!
Image

And of course, I still have to order that decal!

Cripes - Robert did the routing freehand, without a template? Wow: respect to his keen eye and steady hand!

Lovin' that grain on the body, by the way. It's going to be a great looking guitar.

Cheers - C

Ha! That's a rich compliment which I don't begin to deserve! :)

I wouldn't dre-e-e-a-am of doing that task without making a simple rectangular jig to run the router through. But Robert seems to have pulled it off - kudos to him. 8)

Cheers - C

You will give me leave to strongly disagree by stating that a mere review of that monumental rebuild of yours, which still holds the Forum in awe, gives the lie to that. 8)

I just ordered the custom decal for this guitar! It should be arriving from the U.K. sometime next week. I went with the same people that did my Forumcaster decal, so they'll match to a certain extent! I think what I named this one is kinda clever, but I'll wait for it to come and get the pictures up before I give away what it says.

I've done a little bit of research, and I'm 99% sure that I'm going to need to have someone put a clear coat over it once it's applied. Robert usually doesn't do anything like that. He said he would be willing to try, but warned me that I might have to buy another decal if he messes up. I'll talk to him about it again. It could be that if he's not comfortable doing it, I'll drop the neck off with the guy who did my Forumcaster and have him install it. Unfortunately, I'll be stuck waiting for a guitar to dry again.

Yes, Robert is very good at things like that! :) He also does custom engraving in pickguards and truss rod covers. I'm pretty sure he traces out a template first for that though. Still, he's really meticulous with whatever he's working on and he always pays attention to every detail.

And zontar, I actually like the look of those dogear P-90s a lot. Gives me ideas... But no, one project at a time!
