Because it is easier to mess with the technology and electronics, than it is to actually practice and try to become a good guitarist, I opted to buy some different Pre-Amp tubes for my DRRI and see what happens. Allows me to opine:

This Sovtek tube is magical in the DRRI. I thought I could define Fender "chime", but this dude is crystal clear, with great note separation and definition, and it just seems to "swirl" the sound or something (using a Strat). The decay complexity is like nothing else I've tried. In V1, it just makes such a satisfying tone (and this is with the C12K. Alnico might be even better.). Plus I think it is still thick enough on the lows that it is effective in V2 also. Only drawback seems to be that it clangs thru the speaker when you plug in or tap the actual tube (almost like microphonic, but I'm going with high-strung).

Another excellent tube, but different than the Sovtek. This is the thick JJ tone, only syrupy and on steroids. It really beefs up the Vibrato channel in V2. But not as chimey as I really want. I like it, but I am not sure it is worth the extra $$$ over their routine ECC83. But for Metal and OD ... dunno, may be magical.

Disappointing. Actually look a little like the Sovtek, but tone is not close. No swirl, little chime, even more noisy than the Sovtek (with the clanging), and light in the low frequencies.

OK, I've wasted enough time, back to practicing. ........ No .... Wait .... Maybe if I just changed out the speaker. Let's search the net .....................
