Just curious...when you pick up your guitar to practice or just fool around, what is the very first thing you play? Is it a scale, chord progression, a familiar song or series of riffs, what?

I was wondering, because the other day I realized that I almost always play D chord formations all the way up the neck and then back down, followed by pentatonic riffs in D, C, and E minor. Have been doing this since way back when I started playing guitar (of course, the riffs have gotten a little cleaner and more sophisticated, but that's the only change). Anybody?

Welcome to the Forum rudorama. First things to play when you pick up your guitar has changed many times over the years. Lately I just play the tune that I think of first :D

I play an E chord to check the tunning. Then it's a song I have been working on previously.

after tuning i end up playing the same chord progression i made up. i cant sing, or write lyrics, and i dont have any musical theory knowledge, so i always end up playing the same 6 or 7 chord progression, which i know sounds great but cant do anything with

For clean sound, big stummy chord songs like "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" by Pearl Jam.

For the dirty sound, I often bust this out  (it can turn some heads):

First thing I do is check tuning.

First thing I play is something to stretch the fingers out a bit.

I'll play an open G chord, then an open E and then an open D to check my state of tune. Usually in that order. G and E because they involve all six strings and D because it seems to more readily expose any tiny tuning issues there might still be left with the G and B strings after doing the G and E chords. I hate it if the G and B strings aren't spot on. The other strings can all be a few cents out without totally grating on my nerves but those pesky G and B strings drive me batty if they're not bang on.

Straight improv, immediately. Tuning goes without saying.

G major chord, with all six strings strummed
D chord that morphs into a riff
A chord bend into E chord

If any string is out of tune, I'll know it as this little riff is played. I need to get around to writing a song based on this...

I check the tuning first and then I go back as forth with a open E scale. It warms up my fingers and gets me ready. After that I move down the neck and play other major or minor scales, then I strum some open chords and barre chords, and after that, I'm ready to play. :)

Here's that E scale if some of you don't know it. It's a great workout for that pinky finger!

e-----------------------------0-2-4
B-----------------------0-2-4
G-------------------1-2
D-------------1-2-4
A ------ 0-2-4
E-0-2-4

Use the pinky for those 4th fret notes.

the intro to "cemtery gates" for tuning.
"life in the fast lane" to stretch the digits.
