I've switched from my old analogue recording equipment,
and I'm starting to do recording at home using my PC based software.
I was wondering which headphones I should get.

Anyone here have any recommendations for me?

As a long time headphone fiend, I offer this:

With hifi, SQ is only as good as your weakest link. PC soundcards are clean, but basic, so a pricey headphone is likely to be a quality mismatch. My own threshold is about $200, anything more than that, I'd be looking at a dedicated soundcard, but good cards can be had for less than $100.

Also, the pricier the phones, the more likely it will need a dedicated headphone amp to power it properly, but some very good phones are also easy to drive. I find 80ohm is generally the point where amping is needed.

For recording, a pretty neutral monitoring phone is ideal. I'd suggest checking out the Beyer DT250, Shure 840 or the cheaper 440 if you don't want to spend too much. Sennheiser HD25, although it's more of a DJ phone I never found it bassy or boomy and people do use it for recording.

great advice Drubbing, I would only add Sony as a possible brand to check out, they have some nice flat sounding headphones at a reasonable price.

+1 to Drubbing's advice. The only further suggestion I have is to get headphones with a detachable cable.

I'm not sure what you're looking for...

Quality, lightweight, digital/analog, etc.

I use the Sennheiser RS220 when I play my guitar using the headphone jack on my amps.

The sound is VERY good, uncompressed digital audio - 16 Hz–22 kHz, < 0.1 % THD.

The best thing is that it's wireless which is one less cord to have to worry about... something you might not consider, but will really come to appreciate.

If you're not mixing, I doubt you'd need any better sound quality than these offer.

cheers!

I would say -that depends on what is the intention of the use . If you just want to monitor yourself (listen to some pre-recorded music while laying down a new track ,especially when recording voice and acoustic instruments) , then ,IMO, you don't need so expensive cans .
Just be sure they are completely closed-backs , so the pre-recorded sound does not leek into the mix through the mike.
On the other hand , if it is about getting a better impression of what kind of sound you are working with- or you plan to do some mixing through them , you should look for something better , more expensive.
For mixing situations , over longer time ( God forbid - I hope I do use my studio-monitors in those situations  ) , I definitively prefer those half-closed cans. That is more comfortable ,again IMO.
I'm lucky enough to have a good half closed set , an old Sony which I like a lot . My newest cans are Sennheiser HD 280 PRO , which are good closed- backs , and also pretty OK for mixing , so they make a good compromise. Even -not too pricey !
Good luck ! :D
Edit : I also consider the AKG 240 quite equal to the Sennheiser 280

All good advice,
thank you all!

Basically, I'm going to be doing multi track recording.
I'll start with a drum track, adding the bass part, then go over and do the rhythm guitar, then add lead, keyboards, and vocals.
Of course, sometimes I like to do the rhythm guitar before the bass, but you get the idea.

Thanks again!

I'm currently using the Dr. Dre Executive Beats and they sound amazing. I originally thought of getting the Studio version but when I A/B'd them there wasn't any difference that I could hear. I opted for the Executives due to a few added options that have to do with traveling.
My advice would be to go and try them all out and see what appeals to you. I never noticed how much I was missing with regular headphones until I started trying them all. All I know is that with a quality headset you hear instruments in songs that you've never heard before. That was a huge eye opener, and since you'll be using them to record, your going to want to make sure you capture and mix the different instruments properly.
Hope this helped.

No such thing as digital audio with headphones - they have speakers, it's all analog. A digital signal coming from a PC is converted at the soundcard, is never compressed during or after.

Also, specs on khz range mean nothing, and have no bearing on SQ. It's a lab figure, and most phones specs fall outside the range of human hearing anyway. But they contain big numbers which marketing loves, and people think a wider range must be better, or if it goes lower, its bassier. It's not.

Lots of good ones today. Two of the most popular for tracking are the Sony MDR-7506's and the Sennheiser HD280's. When I was shopping for cans a few years ago they were about $99.

As popular as the Beats headphones are, they are the Monster Cable of headphones - great marketing hype, but not great headphones -- way too much EQ hype as well. Unless you're doing rap or hip hop, I'd avoid, as you'll find that your mixes don't translate well to anything else but Beats headphones.

For recording, I've found the AKG240 works well; for recording vocals and eliminating headphone bleedthrough, the AKG K271 sound fantastic and you don't get the 240 bleed. Also has a detachable cable. Expensive, but these are your ears - buy once, cry once.

I wouldn't bother with wireless headphones for recording. Just get a headphone extension cable if you really need the length. Cheap at Radio Shack.

Please stand by for this important Public Service Announcement

Remember, a set of headphones is just a pair of speakers suspended dangerously close to your ears. Nobody is going to tell you the maximum volume you can pump through those speakers. But as a word to the wise, always remember to use headphones sensibly, or you will spend the rest of your life regretting it.

The two Headphones which keep popping up on ratings lists for the best headphones for Home Recording Studios are:

The Sennheiser HD251-II Pro and the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250

Roughly $200

Hope this helps...

cheers!
